Laser Colour Printer Suggestions for Uni

Hey, I'm looking for a colour laser printer. I study medical sciences and it's important to be able to print in colour. I currently have a mono laser printer which is absolutely amazing (Fuji Xerox p265dw) and works flawlessly.

The reason I want a laser printer is because I have noticed that the toner cartridges last far longer and are cheaper to run than the inkjet ones.

Anyone have any good suggestions? I don't need a scanner or anything fancy on it. Just a simple printer than can do double sides. WiFi capability is preferable.

Gracias

Don’t have any printer advice sorry but just interested in the need
Out of interest why is printing in colour particularly important for your degree? Images in assignments? What are printing costs like at uni?

Printing costs at uni are ridiculous, $0.11 per page (that's per side of paper too) and about $0.50 per page for colour.

My degree involves studying a vast range of cells which must be stained very specifically in order to distinguish them from one another and one of the most important aspects is the different colours for each type and area of each cell - especially when there are numerous different types of cells in a single image, B&W just doesn't cut it.

Being able to print out an image and then study and label it properly in colour is far more useful than in B&W or on a computer.

If you are interested in seeing what I mean by staining and colours, google image search "histology" which is a specific area of my study (based on human tissues) and you will get a bunch of different images in which the cells have been stained and you can distinguish individual cells.

      :)

Buy an Android tablet or Surface book? Even an iPad pro?

I’m studying medical imaging, so have similar requirements and use an iPad Pro instead of printing;.

      • Thanks for the description, I’m pretty familiar with cells and staining etc was more wondering why you had to print rather than just using PC to view images etc :)
Agree that colour printing price is pretty expensive :(

for some people (myself included) flicking images/pages on screen just doesn't cut it, its not conducive to studying
i'm no medical prodigy like OP is though, hehe

  • How much do you really need to print each week though?
Would buying a laser printer and subsequent toners be cheaper than just printing at uni library when you need to?
I’m doing medical science as well and haven’t found much colour printing need to justify a laser printer.

    • It's probably not necessary but I personally want to be able to as I am more of a visual learner and I retain information better if I can print it out and write on it. I have already calculated that it is far cheaper to buy a printer in the long run - especially as I plan on using it for the rest of my current degree and also for Medicine when that time comes.

I'm just posting on here in case someone has a suggestion for a high quality printer that doesn't break the bank - especially because when I bought my current mono-laser printer, it was $100 for the printer and a full cartridge of toner which has lasted the entirety of last year and still going this year. It's nearly empty but I have saved a lot of money.

    I recommend Kyocera on quality:

Toner isn't cheap but if you print low volume they'll last for ages.

I've bought a couple of Kyocera printers for different offices from these guys on ebay:

Use PREWINTER for 20% off until 14/3.

OP, you should be looking at small business printers. Home printer ink is expensive for what it is

    • thanks! I've actually got this brand of printer at my work and they are really good. I didn't even think of it.

Just FYI, there are inkjet printers like the Canon Pixma G3600 which attempts to solve the "expensive cartridge" issue by using a refillable tank. Each bottle of ink is pretty cheap probably in the 10-ish under 20 and it can fill up a full tank multiple times. The printer itself will cost about $400 or under. It could be worth keeping an eye out for this.

    • Yep, most people fail to understand companies need to make money, so its

      cheap printer, costly consumables.

      OR

      costly printer, cheap consumables.

The biggest failure is people don't understand printers come with 'starter' consumable. Those inks/toners are not FULL units. So you have to buy replacements soon.

I always laugh when I hear its cheaper to buy a new printer than an ink replacement. Yes this may be true, BUT you're getting another starter cartridge, so it won't last anywhere as long printing compared to buying a replacement ink.
