  • Still flashing when turning pages? Hate that

    • I don't notice that on mine. There's a tiny amount of shadowing though at the bottom from whatever produces the lighting for the reader. It's more obvious when you're relying 100% on the reader's lighting. You get used to it though.

There's no way around it unfortunately. It's just one of the disadvantages of eInk, but compared to shadowy/blurry text or the harsh light of an LCD screen, I think eInk is still the best screen technology for long reading sessions.

They only flash every fifth page or so now.

I'm on my third kindle in at least twice that many years. I haven't noticed it for years. When reading a paper book you get an annoying transition too with the page turn/flip. This is a lot faster than actually turning a real page and very quickly 'unseen'.

So if you're comparing against the a real book, it's vastly better at page turns. If you're comparing against a LCD screen tablet, it's slower but comes at the trade off of backlight/eye fatigue.

      • What t3chshopper said is correct. It only flashes about everything 5th page. I don't even notice it anymore either. There is a setting you can turn on that makes it flash every page turn. This makes that the "pixles" all revert to a 0 state and then the image redraws. Means less ghosting. I don't see any ghosting with this option off though.

Looks like it comes with no factory/manufacturer warranty? Also there's no mention of it but I strongly suspect this is the 'With Special Offers' version (aka ads all over it)…….can anyone confirm? I'd hope not as is very dodgy to sell without flagging this.

Good question, I will ask the customer care.

    • +8

Customer care replied: it's ads free

      • thank you

      • Thank you!

  • Is this the current model? (if so, how do they get them so cheap?)

    • Grey import

    • Its not that cheap, other sites have it at $149 etc.

      • Sorry, I meant cheap compared to Amazon's pricing.. that's why I thought it may not be the current model

        • I'd like that confirmed too.

Great price given it's ad-free etc.

Grey import or not there's not much to go wrong with these and seem well able to take basic abuse. I would recommend a case (ebay - $10ish) with the magnet built in to enable auto turn on/off etc. Just adds to the resilience and protects the screen.

We've got 4 in our family and they work brilliantly.

Use Calibre for copying different format books to the Kindle as well……

    • Do you think Kindle Voyage extra features justifies its high price?

And does the pdf converted text/photo displays well on paperwhite. Thanks

      • +1

I can't comment really as I've never tried the Voyage. That said, for basic book reading for me there's little difference between the 6th and 7th generation Paper Whites. Old eyes? Maybe, but we're talking basic text here. The Kindle I use everyday Gen is a 6 and it's 99.9% fine for all books I read.

A quick google points me to this http://www.trustedreviews.com/reviews/amazon-kindle-voyage

Re Photos. No, but text from pdf is fine. You can use Calibre to convert or Amazon themselves via their Kindle email service. Photos should work but why would you?

        • Thanks mate. Kids book from David Williams, roald dahl have picture sketches and hence I asked. But I guess full photos may not show good (as expected) but sketches might be fine.

  • Amazon is great with grey imports, or used to be at least. I got a Kindle years ago, direct from Amazon US. A family member sat on it on boxing day and ruined the screen; I called Amazon right away, (it was about 2am Christmas night on the west coast of the US) and they sent out a replacement free of charge then and there. It arrived by courier on New Year's Eve, with a postage paid return box to put the broken one in.

No questions asked, not a cent paid, straight to my door in less than 4 business days.

Blew my mind, don't know if they are still like that though.

    • Do you mean this one would have internation warranty? That would cover the risk of buying grey import.

    • +1

It's not really a grey import if you bought directly from Amazon US. In one sense of the word it is, but conflating that to this deal having an Amazon warranty is probably a stretch too far.

      • I think you're probably right, but for semantics: what's the difference? International customer is an international customer, no?

        • There's a huge difference. If you didn't buy it from Amazon direct then they most likely wouldn't have done that.

TGG will have 20% off tomorrow which will bring the price down to $139.2.
(assuming TGG won't jackup the price)
$11 for warranty and same day C&C maybe?

    • +1

Another good option. Also use cashrewards for another 1% off…..

      • overlooked cashrewards, thanks for pointing out.

        • A few Flybuys points too, for those who were in on the flybuys-eBay linkage.

    • +2

thanks for letting me know, I thought I missed this one, but definitely more reliable to get from TGG then shopmonk.

    • I can't find any Amazon Kindle in TGG ebay store. Can you point me?

  • +1

    No stock

  • How many stock did they start with? also sold out very quickly last time.

  • +1

You can buy a 'smart' cover (magnet) for it at kogan for $9 or so.

      is it good?

      • +1

        yes actually. its worth it.

        Thanks for the upvote :)

  • Can anyone tell me which one is better as I got this with usual 60$ kogan off. I got no odea which one is better.

    [kindle kogan] (https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kindle-ereader-paperwhite-3-wi-…)

    • I bought my Kindle from Kogan last month same link you posted, it is good. One thing I find out that the difference between Kogan Kindle and the Officeworks Kindle is that the Kogan one is the 'With Special Offers' version. By saying that, I have not received any ads from it.

For the warranty perspective, you can consider the good guys deal, with the 20% off, you can get it for $139.2. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Kindle-B00QJDU3KY-Paperwhite…

      • Thank You for your help. I already bought it though, nothing is mentioned about the ad in the kogan website for this model however for other models it is mentioned as sponsored. Which year model is the kindle ereader paperwhite 3?

        • +1

It is the 2015 year model.

  • do they have browser to connect to website?

Things I like to read is not downloadable.

  • I've been looking forward to buying it since last year but after considering this is a device released in 2015…
