Cheapest Virtual Private Server (VPS)? Do I need Australian?

After finding myself behind MyRepublic's Carrier Grade NAT I've decided I'd rather use a VPS to get access to things like Home Assistant Integration with Google Home than paying for a static IP.

I'm looking for about the cheapest and tiniest server I can find as I really doubt I'll be throwing much at it (My raspberry Pi's are fine).

Does anyone have suggestions? Australian is probably preferred but as long as the pings aren't terrible I don't think it's essential.

Some VPS hosting deals. For cheap providers that have servers in Australia, we currently use

    • BinaryLane (from $4/month)
    • Network Presence (from $7/month)
    • Vultr (from USD $5/month)
    • RansomIT (from $10/month)

OzBargain itself is hosted on BinaryLane's Sydney servers. Not $4/month though.

    • Thanks Scotty. Yes many of the deals seemed old I wanted a bit of a window into what people were using. I guess I won't be kicking off my ozbargain competitor for 4$/month then :)

When ozbargain first started it was hosted on a Xen VPS with 192MB RAM (11 years ago though). With a bit of tuning it would not be difficult to start an ozbargain-like site with $4/month VPS with 768MB RAM.

    • What does it say about me that I now think BinaryLane has good uptime based on how often I see outages on OzB…

      • Yeah we don't need site uptime monitors. Everytime the site is down we will have an army of ozbargainers notifying us on Facebook/Twitter/emails.

        • Anything to save a buck

  • I use budgetvm(us), linode(singapore) and exigent (aus). But not to mentioned AWS new budget vms (Lightsail) recently released - https://aws.amazon.com/lightsail/?nc2=h_m1
