Sydney - Melbourne Flights (High Full Price Fares)

What a rort, airlines charging $300 each way ($600 return) between Syd-Melb leg on full service (Economy).
Granted its work trip, but still!

Yep it's cheaper to fly one-way to Manila Philippines.

Somebody needs to subsidise the cheap sale fares. For that I thank you.

  • And that's for just Economy !!

Try Qantas Business Class and the flight can cost up to $1,030 - each way (or the cost of a return economy flight to London)

    • I had to book my girlfriend some business class flights (long story) and it ended up being like $800 one way LOL

Was reimbursed so not my money

      • +8

        long story

I'm free for the rest of the day. Happy to read the story.

      • Barnaby? Is that you?

  • Crazy prices. Doublethat and i can get to Europe on Qatar!

  • Why do you need a 'full' service? Its a coffee and snack. Surely you can live 50 mins without food?

    • +1

Corporate travel….by default its full service airlines.

      • +3

then why are you complaining if not paying?

        • +3

Because the pursuit of bargains is compelling.

        • +2

@iforgotmysocks: Isn't it already a bargain as they're not paying?

      • Corporate travel agencies usually have access to highly discounted fares, even if the full fare is $800, corporate discount is likely to be 30%-40% off that.

        • ah no. Having worked in a corporate agency, I can tell you that for certain airlines might get a few more % commission, but talking 5-7% extra, on top of paultry 3-5%. Most corporate agencies, charge a booking/handling fee for everything.

    • +3

can live 50 mins without food?

When was the last time you flew from Sydney to Melbourne in 50 minutes?

      • Its 50 mins in the air on a good day ;)

But ok, lets go on the scheduled 90 mins 'flying time' from gate to gate. Same comment applies. You really need a drink/snack?

Save the $150 dollars and go jetstar, pay $5 for a coffee and $10 for a sandwich, you're still in front by a LOOOOONG way.

        • It could be done is 60 minutes but that ain't never going to happen unless all the planets align and the wind is playing the game as well.

        • @TightBottom: still, you miss the point. Its a 90 min flight. Do you really need to be watered/feed? No you don't!

        • @JimmyF: actually only 60 mins flying. The rest is padding, so they can take off 30 mins late & still claim to be on time.

        • @Kiwibigspender: yes yes yes, we know this, read the thread. The point is, your on the plane for 90 mins. Can you not live without food/water for 60 mins flying time and say 15 mins either side for taxing etc.

        • Jetstar are very unreliable.

Caught in Sydney once on a frequent flyer ticket(& no it wasn't anywhere near free). Was booked on a 7pm flight home & got there about 5pm.

Junkstar cancelled flight & said go home & come back in the morning, but Sydney wasn't home.

Checked & Qantas had plenty of seats on 6, 6.30, 7, 7.30, 8 & 9pm flights(talking hundreds in total), but although I used Qantas ff pts, they wouldn't put me on a Qantas flight.

So I booked a last minute Qantas frequent flyer ticket for the 9pm & then they let me on the 7pm. Had to then apply to get points back for Junkstar ticket I couldn't use.

        • @Kiwibigspender:

Was booked on a 7pm flight home & got there about 5pm.

Got where? Home? So time travel? Sounds good to me! Not sure what your problem was! ;)

Anyhow, Jetstar and Qantas are different companies (same owners) and have different 'rules'. Yes they codeshare, but you can't book jetstar and expect to be moved to a Qantas flight like you wanted, and the same for booking Qantas flight and asking to be moved to a non code shared jetstar flight.

All companies have issues, and if all the flights out for the night are full, then there isn't much most airlines can do for you.

        • No you don't!

          Yes I do. Please continue.

        • @TightBottom: well if you need free watering and feeding every hour, you have to pay for the full-service ticket!

        • @JimmyF: got to Sydney airport at 5pm.

Jetstar can & should move passengers to Qantas flights if Jetstar flight cancelled & Qantas has seats, but there's a big superiority attitude problem at good ol Qantas.

Everyone knows that Qantas owns 100% of Junkstar.

        • @Kiwibigspender: So you did time travel then? As your flight left Melbourne at 7pm and you arrived in Sydney at 5pm!

Everyone knows that Qantas owns 100% of Junkstar.

Owns yes…. But its not the same or as simple as just moving people between the two like you say. Virgin owns tiger too, but they are different companies and you don't see either moving paxs between them either.

The superiority attitude problem seems to be you, who wanted to be moved to something you hadn't purchased.

But Qantas if you want superior service and options. Its as simple as that.

        • @JimmyF: at no. Virgin owns 100% of Tiger, just as Qantarse owns 100% of Junkstar. They are linked & so they should solve each other problems, as anything bad on one reflects on the parent.

Qantarse is in the dog house, already, expressing political views, which they should have stayed out of.

        • @Kiwibigspender: virgin NEVER has ever put a virgin pax onto a tiger plane or a tiger pax onto a virgin plane.

Jetstar has never put a pax on to a qantas plane

Qantas only puts paxs on jetstar when its codeshare with qantas, so its not really a 'jetstar' plane to them in this case as such.

Just because you 'own' someone, doesn't mean its the wild west like you think.

        • +1

@JimmyF: don't know about VIrgin/Tiger but Qantas has put Jetstar pax on their aircraft.

Might want to look into your company's policy regarding this. Some companies have a negotiated rate and/or will not allow booking of the lowest fare class (since a level of flexibility might be needed).

Leisure bookings tend to be done at the lowest rate, which is definitely not usually $300 per leg.

These flights tend to reward you with more FF points/Status, and since it's not funded by you, make the most of out it.

    • definitely not usually

      • Haha caught out..

I can confirm, but please check.

  • +1

From an ozbargain perspective, the benefits to the ozbargainer are the free flight, free food / drink (even those horrible muffins or whatever) and potentially some FF points.

  • Had a conversation about this recently - we have to buy fully flexible fares in case of cancellations etc. They are so expensive. I'm sure it would be cheaper over the course of a year to buy non-refundable cheaper tix and just forfeit every cancelled fare/changed itinerary

  • If you are really keen on saving your company some money, you can drive to Melb.

  • For a 1.5 hours flight its a rort. I flew on my own coin from perth to melb for $300 one way. But thats a 3 hour flight…..

  • Isn't Virgin only $99 for a one-way?

    • that's a sale fare. There are around a dozen different fares. You won't generally get $99 fares Mon-Fri in peak hour, which is approx. 6-8am or 4-7pm or in holiday periods. Virgin (better domestic airline than Qantas) was often cheaper than Qantas, but now they are often the same & sometimes Virgin costs more.

Qantas does have a lot of govt contracts. Despite Virgin being better domestically, Qantas has a much bigger international network & many get sucked into so called frequent flyer benefits, which seem to be diminishing.

  • What time of day? Are you flexible with the time at all?

I usually book a 10am flight which is cheap and get moved to the 6am flight which is the expensive one.
Don't have to pay the difference.
Occasionally the 6am is full and I get the next one. So if I really need the 6am then I book that and cop the extra cost.

Likewise book last flight of the day back, and get on a flight around 5-6pm which is crazy expensive but panther cheap price.

Only really works if you have Gold or Platinum FF status.

  • Is it a last minute trip, I mean this is how the airlines make their money. If it's for business and you don't have a choice or dates or the luxury of waiting for sale fares then you pay full price.

  • As with all business trips. $600 return a few days in advance.

I'm so confused as to how you are surprised/annoyed by this..

Have you ever thought of the fact that you 'can' actually get a flight at the last minute?

If they didn't deploy these pricing strategies its likely that all flights would be sold out and you might not be able to get a flight for days/weeks as a result.

Its fair because it allows those that really need to get somewhere to do so by paying the price. If one of your loved ones died and you had to hop on a plane straight away you'd be much happier forking out the big bucks than being told 'sorry we sold all out seats at $50 a pop - all flights are sold out for the next two weeks'.

  • Can confirm the last time I took a business trip Mel/Syd, it was $600. That was special corporate rate. I could’ve picked the cheaper (no flexibility), but why would I? If I missed the flight, I had to personally pay for it.

    • cos if you join qantas or virgin club, what you do is book a later flight than you think you need, then if early, once in club ask if can get on an earlier flight.

Soon pay for club membership that way.

  • Tiger is owned by Virgin & Jetstar by Qantas so we only have 2 airlines flying to route…
