Letterbox

Hi guys,

I am looking to grab a letterbox, as I broke ours. Hoping to grab one soonish and located in Sydney area so wouldn't mind picking it up aswell. I also would prefer the "original type" (they look like a hat with a pole in the middle) or the concrete ones.

Thanks in advance

Check the catalogues that turn up in your …. oh… nevermind :)

  • As Davo has mentioned — Bunnings :) We had a renovation this year adding in picket fence in the front yard and got ours from Bunnings (those metal boxy ones that you slide into the hole you cut out from picket fence).

As of the traditional one (metal box sitting on a pole), I found them prone to abuse. Our previous one was completely vandalised. Or maybe it's just us who live right on the edge of public housing area…

    • my friends had the same issue, every friday night the local kids would go around bashing letterboxes. They had spent hundreds on huge metal letter boxes, attached it to the ground with 50kgs of cement etc etc with no success.

Then they cemented in some tubing. On friday afternoons (after the mail has arrived) they just slide the letterbox out of the tube, problem solved. And on sunday, they slide the letterbox back in.

      • Davo - you have some very clever friends….

After replacing it twice, we just kept unbashing the old one. A rivet gun worked well, then the morons grew up and I guess are stealing cars. And after it was battered looking, they left it alone. It seemed to have something to do with being new or good looking.

But if you are living where Scotty does, that probably wont work there is more younger ones growing up all the time, to replace these morons.

To the OP Bunnings has a very large range. Starting from around $15. BTW how did YOU break a letterbox Or maybe I shouldn't ask.

(A rivet gun and hammer to bash out any dents works wonders on the thin metal ones if it was one of those)

        • how bout building a brick letterbox ? you can buy the faceplate from bunnings, milano style or the other one (can't remember what the name is), the latter one can hold up to A4 size. thing is, you need to build a brick letterbox lol

        • RE: brick letterboxes.

        • it looks as it's neatly bashed ? (see on the side)

  • haha thanks for the amusing and helpful comments. Ended up going to bunnings and buying a metal post for like $20 and plating the old letterbox "head", placing it back in the original position after some handywork.
