Used, Demo and New Kia Sportage AWD?

Hi guys just wondering what you guys would do in my shoes.

I'm pretty much set on a kia sportage. I will be buying in cash, intending to keep it for 3-4 years(most likely shorter) looking at the base model with AWD but probably a reverse camera is ideal.

Looking at the prices,

2015 : 28-29k
2016 : 29-33k
2017 : 32-37k (some demo[MY18] some used some new[MY17])
2018 : Cheapest I could find was 35k

From what I can see, factoring in the 7 year warranty, it seems like the value between the 2015 and 2016s are not very different except that the 2016s are quite hard to come by.

Now that we've had a overview of the market. Here are the individual ads that I'm tossing up against (cheapest representatives for their conditions and from the looks of it, all have reverse cameras)

28k used 2015[MY15] about 33,000 km traveled (I've ruled this out, but i'm putting this here to set a base)
29k used 2016[MY16] about 26,000 km traveled with reverse camera
32K demo 2017[MY17] says 20km traveled
34k new 2017[MY17]
35k demo 2018[MY18] I'm not so likely to go for this one but at 15km traveled, it doesn't seem like such a bad deal

The ozbargainer in me is looking at the used 2016, but in the grand scheme of things is 3k more worth it for 1 a car 1 year younger (2017 demo) with much less kilometres traveled. Again, leading on from that, if i'm willing to pay 3k more for that, would another 3k be okay to pay for a demo 2018 model (but we're facing diminishing returns here).

Thank you all for your response!

Word of warning. If you're relying on the balance of the 7 year warranty, make sure that either:

    • it was serviced on time at the required intervals at a Kia Dealership and you have the documentation to prove it. Call their service teams and they should be able to confirm if you have doubt.

    • if it was serviced elsewhere, you have the invoice detailing what grade oils, exact parts, etc used on it are, or can obtain it. You need to be 100% on this.. grade/brand of oil, brand of filters, etc. Being vague and odds are they'll knock you down. Thankfully I had access to its non-kia dealer service history (mechanic at work who tracked all oils/parts/filters used throughout its life), and it all got sorted out under warranty. This was just inside 5 years of a 5 year warranty (literally - 4 years, 10 months).

If you cant have either of these, consider the warranty by in large, useless.

I'm 90% of the way through a warranty claim on a 2013 Kia Sportage… 90% because I am yet to get my car back after the engine seized in November 2017… should be later this month. A short engine is being replaced under warranty, but not before its service history got put under some pretty heavy scrutiny. There havent been big reports of this being widespread with the Sportage from what my mechanic and Kia have told me - so its something out of the ordinary on mine… The Kia Optima's apparently have a widespread problem, which is completely different. Based on my experience so far, I'd buy another Kia - this doesnt seem like a chronic fault, and their handling of the warranty has been good, given the service history was available. Edit: I'm also getting around in a free loan car from the dealership (despite not having ever serviced it there) until I get my car back… so whilst its a pain going from a sportage to a cerato - I'm not completely stuffed.

The alternate if it wasnt accepted as a warranty job looked pretty grim - the same time that mine went, a subaru suffered major engine failure… only it was 12months out of warranty. Repair cost circa $12k, rendering the car useless and at a practical scrap value ($4k).

    • Thats annoying. I've never had an engine sieze on me before. Especially on such a new car.

Yea which is why i'm pretty adamant on the warranty and will probably not buy anything other than a used Toyota or Kia in Australia.

I saw the servicing prices and intervals. They seem pretty reasonable considering that the Camry needs to be serviced every 9 months.

I was wondering what you thought about the pricing vs models that I posted?

      Thanks for your comments!

      • The warranty will be dependant on the servicing logbook - dont listen to any salesmens hype… head office will care about two things - how and when it was serviced. Saying it was the old owners muck up wont change anything - if its not done to their specs, your warranty will be useless.

Your pricing seems really high if its the true base model when compared with pricing on kia website… which should be used as a most expensive comparison. I bought mine 2nd hand from a known source, 2.5years old but with high KMs for its age, so paid a pittance of what you're up for for (what was) the top end model - leather seats, reverse camera, sunroof, electric everything, etc.

The only thing I'd change is I'd go a diesel given the opportunity. Its fuel economy is pretty useless, but the 2.4L petrol has a bit more guts to it than the 2.0L petrol. The diesel should handle well.

      • They seem pretty reasonable considering that the Camry needs to be serviced every 9 months.

        2018 Camry - Every 12 months/15,000km = $195 capped for 5 services
        Old camry was every 9m/15,000km

Depends on what mileage you do:
        Diesel 2017 Sportage:

        1 Year or 15,000 km $419.00
        2 Years or 30,000 km $487.00
        3 Years or 45,000 km $480.00
        4 Years or 60,000 km $713.00
        5 Years or 75,000 km $471.00
        6 Years or 90,000 km $587.00
        7 Years or 105,000 km $500.00

  • Looking at the prices,

    2015 : 28-29k
    2016 : 29-33k
    2017 : 32-37k (some demo[MY18] some used some new[MY17])
    2018 : Cheapest I could find was 35k

Are those new/demo prices drive away, or plus stamp? Need to know to determine 'value'.

28k used 2015[MY15] about 33,000 km traveled (I've ruled this out, but i'm putting this here to set a base)
29k used 2016[MY16] about 26,000 km traveled with reverse camera

I'd be seeing if they're hire cars first and foremost. Whilst hire cars are normally around 40-60,000km, those kms could still make it a hire car/fleet car. Don't ask the dealership (they will say either not sure, or it's a company car), go there and open the service book and look at first owner. WTH = Hire car (any other company will just mark it as such).

I don't know my Kia's that well, so were there any model updates between 2015/2016/2017/2018? Any nice new safety features (blind spot monitors, radar cruise etc)?

Oh also, all prices are drive away prices.

  • +2

I always recommend going for the next model up, slightly used like this - 2017 SLi, 3,000kms for $35,231 drive away

Resale purposes, you're not up against ex-rentals, and by being slightly used it's had the bigger part of it's depreciation taken off.

But for general comfort etc it's so much better:
    Compare the 2

    • Leather not cloth interior
    • Keyless entry/start
    • Forward collision/lane departure/aeb
    • led headlights with DRLs
    • 10-way electric drivers seat
    • led taillights
    • privacy glass
    • rain sensing wipers
    • bigger and better trip display
    • sat-nav
    • dual-zone climate control

Hit up some dealers, find out how much their demos are :)

Thanks for looking this up for me!

And its a great idea. 3k more is a pretty good deal too.

Yup i'm aware of WTH - we try harder thats a slogan for one of the rental companies.

  • New cars are overrated.

    • +1

Used cars are much the same as new cars, but cheaper.

    • I agree (mostly)

Would demo fall under new or used?

If these were the only two options available, would you reckon that the demo is actually quite a good deal?

29k used 2016[MY16] about 26,000 km traveled with reverse camera
      32K demo 2017[MY17] says 20km traveled

      Thanks!

      • Spoken to any dealers? Quite often they'll have demo's that aren't on Carsales, or can do similar prices on a new one.

We can't advertise on Carsales until the demo is 6 months old

        • Oh? Didnt know that and no. Have not spoken to a dealer yet.

I'm just looking at prices for now. Main reason was the partner and I would be working in the same complex soon and we're thinking of selling our two car to gret this one.

        • Hey Spackbace,
I am intrigued. Is that a national company policy, specific dealership policy or general industry practice?

        • @chewbot:

Many manufacturers are switching to that model for whatever reason. There used to be a lot of Dutch auctioning on Carsales - dealers dropping prices on demo's to outbid each other. Manufacturers must not have liked it because it butchers their product

          And sorry, general Manufacturer policies

        • Thanks.

I bought a 2015 sportage platinum 2 years ago (12 months old). Used 23k on the clock for 30k. Good car could not be happier with it.
