Credit Card with Benefits Like Coles MasterCard

I really enjoyed my Coles Mastercard in past few years. It's my go-to card for day to day transactions.

Now its a mess with Citibank. OTP for everything and cant use mobile app on 2 phones is final nail in coffin for me.

Which card you guys recommend as replacement. I am looking for following features:

  1. Can use for day to day grocery shopping etc. Not looking for Qantas or other award points.
  2. Collect point on almost everywhere.
  3. instant discount on groceries or similar things

+1 for Citibanks dire IT systems. On my travel credit card they send me a paper statement every month for the $2 charge for the paper statement being reversed from the previous month when I rang up and tell them I have been opted in to e-statements for years.

  • Why can't you use the app?

    • they have locked to app for one device per account

  • I hate to say it, from what I have seen there is no replacement. Citi have ruined the card imposing their poor IT systems and removing reward earning on all govt spend

  • New Coles Credit card customers can no longer avail the awesome Account Cover Plus Insurance which had price protection on purchases for 24 Months. Existing customers don't have access to any online forms for making claims. You would have to call up a number and try to make a claim. If Citibank screws that up then I'm gonna cancel my card as well.

    • I just went on the insurance website for claiming and it looks to be the same as before? Did you go through the latitude financial website before?

EDIT : Woops, just realised that the whole insurance scheme has changed. Need to dig up that PDS they sent to figure out how to claim..

      • if you applied for your Coles Credit Card before 25th February 2018, Account Cover Plus was an optional insurance cover you may have purchased for your Coles Credit Card. If you did choose to purchase Account Cover Plus, your premium is based on your Outstanding Balance on your Monthly Statement and is capped at a maximum charge of $50. This Premium is automatically debited to your Coles Mastercard account each month and is contained in your statement.

If you have an existing Account Cover Plus policy on your Coles Mastercard and would like to make a claim, please contact us on 1800 800 230.

        • oh how terrible, I hate talking to people on the phone :(

        • @kza2610: same here… the online forms worked great and my claims were always approved in less than 3 working days

        • @0FoxGiven: I just got home and looked at the 'new PDS' they sent me recently. It looks to be the same as before - "submit claim online at www.latitudefinancial.com.au" so seems like that didn't change?

      • I just successfully submitted a claim at https://www.latitudefinancial.com.au/insurance/make-a-claim.…

So fingers crossed it works ok!

        • I submitted one on Thursday night sort of as a test , havent heard back yet but hoping it doesnt change!

My claim got approved today! So can confirm that the previous online form still works 🤗

      • Oh? Sweet! I'll try one today as well

        • I submitted another one today and it was approved in 3 hours! The first one I did took a week though so I was getting worried. Fingers crossed that they won't change the process/insurer later on!!

  • It seems that at the moment everything remains the same, except the app can only be put on one device.

So wrong.. Account cover plus has been grandfathered. No points on govt spend. No online claims for warranty/price/merchandise protection.

      • But what's changed for existing policy holders? That you have to call to make a claim?

I'm not sure what you mean about the points on govt spend.

        • Exactly that.

As with all other Citi cards you earn zero reward points for any govt spending. Council rates, ATO fees, Council Parking, Australia post. All of these are govt bodies and are exempt from earning any points at all.

  • Which card you guys recommend as replacement.

Check the recent Amex offers, with bonus points on this forum.

If you want no-fee, Amex Essential could be an option - it satisfies your points 1-3. But please note once you apply for this card, you become an existing cardholder; and no longer eligible for the new customer card offers with fees and bonus points. If after weighing this, and still like more info, here is my post on it. Reward rate (as cashback) is 0.741% (cf Coles Rewards card 1%, Coles No-Fee card 0.25% I think). Of course, the Amex cards with fees have higher reward rates.

  • New Coles Wallet app is a mess. Why these people/citibank have to break perfectly working old app. It asks for username pass everytime if there is change of network connection which is very annoying.

  • I can’t user the old username and password, need to register again and on their website it asks the ATM pin to register, is it allowed to ask the customer ATM pin?

    • Was hesitant at first, but had to provide in the end. Otherwise, could not register.

      • Yes it’s strange to ask ATM pin, why don’t they just ask cvv number and dob to verify the information. In my mind, any website asking ATM pin is a phishing website lol.

        • Agree.

        • +3

They don't have your physical card though, so what are they going to do with your Pin?

CVV is probably worse because they can buy online if they have your card number and have/can guess your expiry date.

        • @John Kimble: You got a valid point.

  • Anyone using the latitude infinity credit card? Seems like I can use Apple Pay with it too like the 28 deg card. It earns 1 pt per $1 spent and redeems woolies gift cards at 5000 pts per $50 which is equal to the Coles rewards earn rate (excluding shopping at Coles etc)

I’m gonna call Coles to see if they part the imburse my $99 annual fee

  • Is there a card with
    No foreign exchange transaction fees
    Some sort of rewards earn
And most importantly price protection for at least 6 months?

The list below is all the credit cards I know that don't have international fee's.

If you want all 3 (No International Fees + Points + Price Protection) you would be limiting that list down to ANZ, Commbank, Bankwest and 28 Degrees.

Virgin/Qantas Points are worth on average about 0.013c per point. So figure out what you will spend on the card every year and make sure your are earning more then enough points to cover any yearly fee's and actually make a nice little sum ontop. Otherwise the points are just not worth it. And the moment you don't pay your cards balance ontime and start getting charged interest will wipe out any 'savings' you have earned from the points too. In the case of ANZ, Bankwest, Commbank and others - they dont let you earn Frequent flyer points directly. You earn their points which you need to convert to the frequent flyer points. So you will need to do the maths on what the earn rate actually is once the conversion is done.

28 Degrees will give you the price protection for an additional fee per statement period. So it will not be a fee free card the moment you put this option on. Its similar to the Coles Rewards card setup a year or so ago.

      See below….

      ING

You need to be an ING Everyday account holder to get these cards

      • ING Orange One - $0 Yearly Fee - No Points - No Price Protection
      • ING Orange One Platinum - $199 Yearly Fee - Earns Cashback - No Price Protection

      Coles

      • Coles Rewards Mastercard - $99 Yearly Fee - Points Earned - No Price Protection

      Bankwest

According to Bankwest any Platinum, Gold, World or Breeze cards get price protection insurance. Read Page 5 of this document:
      https://www.bankwest.com.au/content/dam/bankwest/documents/l…

      • Bankwest Zero Platinum - $0 Yearly Fee - No Points Earned
      • Bankwest Breeze Platinum = $99 Yearly Fee - No Points Earned
      • Bankwest More Platinum = $160 Yearly Fee - Points Earned
      • Bankwest QANTAS Platinum = $160 Yearly Fee - Points Earned
      • Bankwest MORE World Platinum = $270 Yearly Fee - Points Earned
      • Bankwest QANTAS World Platinum = $270 Yearly Fee - Points Earned

      ANZ

      • ANZ Rewards Travel Adventures = $225 Yearly Fee - Points Earned - Price Protection Included.

      Latitude Finance

      • Latitude 28 Degree's Platinum = $0 Yearly Fee - No Points Earned - Price Protection Available as an option.

      Westpac

      • Westpac Lite Card = $9 MONTHLY Fee - No Points Earned - No Price Protection.

      Commonwealth Bank

      • Diamond Award = $349 Yearly Fee - Points Earned - Price Protection Included.
  • With the exception of the 28 degrees card, all the price protection offered is very limited in time frame and wording, eg commbank is only within that city of purchase and can't be an online transaction

  • I went from Platinum back to the most basic CBA credit card after the AMEX/QFF points debacle to avoid paying the yearly fee. I also have 28 Degrees that only gets pulled out on overseas trips. I haven’t used it in a year as I have been saving for a house (almost at 30% deposit!).

I started a new job six months ago and travel a lot, regularly charging meals, Uber’s, hotels and flights. I am debating whether to apply for a QFF friendly card just to use when I pay for charges as I travel, normally $800 for an average week (I claim the money and have it back in my bank account the next week). Any card recommendations?
