I don't really have any other requirements. Just looking for something others recommend that is value for money and doesn't have any major failings or faults.

Just go to your nearest officeworks or jb hifi. You can pretty much choose any laptop you want from there seeing as it you need it today and your requirements are generic

I purchased one of gumtree, cheap and runs well can do what you need for 150 bucks if i didn't ask so many questions i'm sure i could have got it in one day.
Firstly look for the basics done right:
- good keyboard
- good trackpad
- good webcam
- good build quality
- good OS (Bloat-free, Spyware-removed, Windows 10 Pro)
- decent ports (>2 USB, HDMI, SD card, Headphone jack)
Next consider the minimum specs:

- 17mm thickness
- 1.7kg weight
- 1080p IPS screen
- 256GB SSD

Those are very broad requirements. Pretty much any modern laptop under $1000 can do web browsing . office work and remote desktop.
