Any Good Mobile Plans for a Family?

I am almost done with my Telstra contact (ends mid May) and would like to do a SIM-only prepaid plan with Aldi if I can't get any good way to combine my wife and I's mobile plans.

She is currently on contract with Voda and I asked them via live chat and they say they don't have a way to share minutes (only data). I seem to remember Optus allowing minutes/data sharing on a separate SIM for a fee? I would be open to that. I know in the US they have family plans that include up to 4-5 lines under one account, one bill. Why don't they have those here?? Is there a provider that allows multiple lines under one plan?

So, what are my options? Do any of you have any mobile plans that allow you to combine plans into one billing? I know my friends have "shared data" among the family but they are still paying separate bills for their services, which I want to avoid.

I asked them via live chat and they say they don't have a way to share minutes (only data).

Not necessary anymore because minutes are typically unlimited anyway. There isn't a need to share phone call allowances as most plans over a certain amount will be unlimited talk, TXT and MMS.

Kogan for example offers unl. talk / txt with very generous data allowances. I have my entire family on Kogan.

Vodafone, Optus and Telstra all have data pooling and data sharing plans. You need to crunch the numbers yourself and work out which is the best value according to your own parameters. Some telcos offer unlimited streaming of music that won't affect download quotas (Optus has Spotify streams) so that is another feature to consider.

Look at the Mobile Plans page that we've setup to find the best ones voted by community

    • Thanks for the link, will look up the offers there. Yes you're right about the minutes, I was just emphasizing that I need to be able to just have one account and share everything.

You can just buy yearly prepaid plans for everyone and recharge as required. There really isn't a need to go post-paid and there are no real financial advantages in doing so.

Pretty much every provider has yearly plans. Compare Coles, Aldi, Kogan, etc

  • If you just want one bill, you can do that, but it requires you to be the owner of all the numbers listed.
My kids services appear on my Telechoice bill. Be aware though, that if you want to separate the bills again you will need to undo this (so, for example, my kids can't port their number elsewhere, only I can).

    • Thanks for that. Does it mean that it's cheaper to have the one bill (and 3-4 lines) rather than 3-4 separate bills?

  • I have done some research on this. There are providers that allow you to do what you want, but they are more expensive than if you had bought 2 separate unlimited plans from Aldi or Kogan.

    • Hmm it's true, the aldi and kogan deals are crazy competitive in pricing/features

      • Yep, Crazy competitive if you sign up for Kogan's 365 day plans. I recently bought 2 Kogan 6GB plans for around $155 each for the year. Missed their 2 for 1 promo because I bought them just before their promo came out, could have got it for about $120 each. Don't know how Mr.Kogan is making any money off us, professionals. :)

    • Great info - thanks!

  • I just saw this deal on Kogan (you get a second SIM free)

That's crazy that you can have 2 lines running off the same account for essentially $16 per line per month ($400 / 12 / 2) with 16GB shared data
