Thought people? Yay or Nay?
TL:DR basically pay subscription (or rent) a solar panel and get a solar credit which then can be use to reduce your bill.
^Moving eligibility conditions apply. Transferring your AGL Virtual Solar subscription and electricity plan is only possible within NSW and cannot be moved within the 12-month recontracting period or to a property which does not meet the original eligibility criteria, such as to a home with a rooftop solar system installed.
*Individual discounts are based on the performance of a physical offsite solar system and the amount of solar energy it generates.
Potential savings will vary as a result, and will be affected by individual factors including your current energy usages, current electricity plan discounts, AGL Virtual Solar subscription period, seasonality and weather conditions and events.
You could be probably saving more by switching out to cheaper electricity providers
what's your recommendation for NSW?
Can't make one as I'm based in Victoria but surely there should be cheaper alternatives to AGL in NSW. They aren't anywhere near the cheapest 5 here in Victoria
TL;DR = Can't install solar? Pay a subscription and AGL will give you access to offsite solar generation. Your subscription fee will be less than the solar credits earned.
Not knowing the intricate details and contract terms, I ran some really quick numbers (4kWh system, 4 hours of accumulated sunlight per day, 25c usage tarrif), and they are assuming about 30% solar usage in their sums which I think is pretty reasonable. So the net benefit is perhaps a $100-$200 saving on your annual bill. This could be worth it - but you need to look at the lock in terms etc.
It seems very gimmicky. But hey, a saving is a saving.
