NBN (FTTP) Connection Advice and Process Please

Hi All,

Am just wanting to get some advice as i've already searched heaps of forums (incl. whirlpool) and there is no definitive process as it seems to vary slightly between the NBN technologies.

[SITUATION]
So three weeks ago, the NBN cable guys were'cabling' on the street and the next day, this "NBNco" box was installed on the same wall as my fuse box without my knowledge. Does this mean I no longer have a choice of where the NTD is going to be installed inside my house? Because directly on the other side of this box inside is the master bedroom (where my bedside table is)?

[PROCESS - FTTP]
What is the process for FTTP please??
1) Cabling -Done
2) NBN Box on wall outside house -Done
3) NBNco site still says my address is "Build Commenced" -Does this mean there's still no signal going to the fibre and it is just the physical completed?
4) HOW do I get my NTD install notice and/or expedite the process? -I've signed up to Last years BuzzTelco deal which requires connection by "End of March"
5) At this point, with reference to my situation above, Do I still have an option to pick location since they are only extending the fibre cable and is powered from inside anyway?
6) Router Choice -My TP Link W8970 should be fine right? As only a Cat6 is required direct to NTD?

Many thanks in advance

Dunno what it's like now, but my experience years ago with FTTP in an apartment was that the NBN contractor came and cabled from the outside of the unit to where we wanted the NTD to be.

That happened to mean the fibre started from outside the apartment in the stairwell in through above the front door, around the perimeter of the unit to the other side - a good 20 odd meters. The fibre was just run along the ceiling skirting but you didn't notice it unless you were looking for it.

I don't remember if I contacted NBNCo directly, but I imagine it was organised by the telco.

    • apartment … FTTP

      lucky you

      • No longer… Moved further out west cause we had kids and couldn't afford to buy a house in the area :( No NBN at all here!

Yeah you get to still pick

Mine was put in the same place which goes straight into the garage. But when I arranged for it to be connected, the NBN guys rocked up and I said I wanted it installed where the existing phone line was. They were happy to get in the roof to run the cable etc at no extra cost - You usually get a certain amount free before they start charging.

-3. Until the area "goes live", nothing will happen. You can sign up for an ISP, but NBNco won't come out until they have the area ready.

-4. The install process will start when the area goes live (assuming Buzz are onto it). Good luck expediting - typically, NBNCo will turn up about 2 weeks after you request installation (assuming your area is live) - we are in a new FTTP area at work though, and it's been closer to 6 weeks.

-5. I have been told that they will cover up to 25 metres of cabling at no cost. I have no idea what changes with a "difficulty" factor, but I would assume they would take the path of least resistance, which may not be what you want. ie. they'll probably just conduit around the outside of your house and up the wall.

    • Thanks you thats plenty of info.

Only other one.. do you recall roughly the timeframe between streetworks to "area go live".

Looks like at this rate I wont make the RSP deal but at least I can plan my mobile wifi expense and data in advance to the nbn lead up.

      Thanks in advance!

The ISPs have more information than what's on the NBN website - when I called in December, they were able to give me an exact date for our building being RFS and it did happen pretty much on schedule. However, getting someone to actually do something after that date still seems to be out of anyone except NBNCo's hands - ie. we were RFS on 23 December last year and we're not getting connected until this Thursday (and we were told that it could have taken another month).

I don't know if that's typical though - have HFC at home and it was 2 weeks from me calling up an ISP to having NBNCo send out 2 guys to plug in a modem… then another 3 weeks for them to send another 3 guys out to plug in an isolator that they didn't check was installed the first time. Your tax dollars at work.

Contacting your proposed RSP and give them a gentle reminder. Nothing more will happen without an order place by them.

NTD can certainly go where you choose. If you have not already data cabled the house. There are some limits. No wet areas, minimum height. Remember you will need power for the NTD, and if you intend to co locate your router. Start a diary of contacts. Hopefully all smooth though. At least with FTTP, you will be able to connect at any speed you want, and with the lower operating cost, you will be subidising my connection!

  • Hi All again. Am just seeking further advice as the situation has changed.

    1) Had signed up for BuzzTelco (which is now defunct). They had all the internal/external NTD hardware installed via NBN, but the NBN never "activated" the line and was obviously never followed up by Buzz considering their predicament.

    2) I decided to pull the pin on Buzz Monday afternoon (23rd April).. a whole day before the official announcement. and had signed up with Mate Communicate.

    3) MATE advised that because the FTTP line was never activated, they have to send a technician out again, and I received a confirmation email yesterday that this appointment is scheduled for 8th May (another whole 2 weeks internet-less, first world problems I know! but have been on 4g internet since january)

    4) I thought FTTP was able to be flipped and churned easily. Is the above still the case If I go with another provider (ie Telecube/Mungi/ABB), or its just taking a while because MATE is just an online reseller of Vocus?

Any advice appreciated.. just want the interwebz ASAP! and Thanks in advance!!
