Mercedes ESP ABS unavailable

Hi,

Recently bought a mercedes r class. All was good for 4 months until yesterday after giving the car a wash I got a "ABS ESP unavailable, check owners manual".

Freaking out abit on what if this is an $$$ issue.

Searched up and apparently theres a tool I can plug in to see what the error code is (OBD2?)

What is something cheap and good (ozbargain quality) i can buy.

If anyone has experience with such issue input would be appreciated.

Thanks

Such problems usually occur when you have a faulty wheel bearing or abs sensor. Any OBD2 SRS/ABS scanner will do the job since they have been standardised for some time now, I have some Autel products that work quite well.

  • Thanks would something like this do the trick?

That can't read ABS codes, only check engine light codes, you'll need a scanner that can read the ABS computer, something more like this: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AUTEL-AL619-ML619-OBD2-ABS-AIRBA…

      • Thanks for the info…wow thats price :')

Well .. a Mercedes is pricey as well :-)

I think the above has given you the best advice.

          Cheers

Well if you think about it, that's the same price as one diagnostic charge at the MB dealer. Plus, you can use it on any future cars you buy so its quite reasonable once you factor in what you'd be paying to diagnose the fault anyway.

  • time to upgrade to a toyota

    • 100%… once i get the issue fixes its a trade in for a kluger!

      • Why did you buy a R-Class in the first place??

  • Merged from Help Choose OBD2 Scanner

    Hi,

My Mercedes has been playing up with ABS/ESP warnings appearing and disappearing.

Thought to get an OBD2 scanner, But I had never heard of them before and not sure what to get as apparently there's ones that dont read all code (ABS?)

What is one that should last me for years and work with other vehicle yet still read all codes for the Mercedes (ABS ect)

    Cheers,

    • Maybe get the pros to read it and diagnose it? Or would you prefer your abs/stability control didn't work in the event of an accident?

Buy one of the cheap $5 ones off of Ebay and connect it to your phone. It does everything a more expensive one will do.. used them many times.

I read that these ones dont read failt codes for things like abs esp and other

    • ABS light is usually a sensor failure

Why do want an OBD2 Scanner if you don't know what it does? Are you planning on fixing the issue yourself?

      • Ive done some research over the weekend and kniw what it does now. Just want yo havr iy handy at disposal if an issue arrises in the future.

For example this issue turned out to be low voltage, the battery needed replacment. If i had the device to diagnose i could just change it without taking it to the mechanic and charging more money.

I just need some guidance on which one to buy

        • Just make sure you buy one that can't write to the ECU because if you don't know how to use it you could brick the cars ECU and cause a more expensive fix. Depending on the year and model you will need an adapter since the obd2 port is different.

  • Its been diagnosed as low voltage. Need new battery but want to get one of these for future.

    • You may find that cheap OBDII readers may or may not do other vehicle systems such as ABS or SRS. Most will only do basic engine stuff.

So, depends on how much you want to spend, will depend on how much functionality you will get from it.

And for future reference, MB are a nightmare to work on diagnostics wise.
