  • quick question: can we buy these member offer instore? their click and collect system is terribly slow

    • +3

Of course you can purchase in store

    • two hours is too slow?

      • +14

if i could kill the pain of living in less than 2 hours, that would be super

  • How does Mountain Goat taste, which mainstream brand is it similar to?

    • +1

Mountain goat is micro brewery that I believe has been bought out by cub.
They make some good beers worth trying for $15.

      • +4

Mountain Goat now owned by Asahi, CUB by Anheuser-Busch InBev :)

        • Cheers. I note Woolies is selling it for $60/case. Might use that $170 voucher from an earlier deal then. :)

    • +1

Can't compare it to other brands, depends what type you get I guess.
Fancy Pants is fantastic though, I've been drinking it solid for the past year or so. Best poured and flavours open more when it not freezing cold.
The pale ale isn't too bad, I would say it's very pale… no big flavours but would make a great session ale.
      I'll definitely be buying both.
      I haven't tried the others.

    • +2

The Mountain Goat Summer Ale and the Fancy Pants are good commercial premium beers - pasteurised so no real "craftiness" to them. The Steam Ale is a pretty poor beer IMHO, a lot of variability.

    • +1

Fancy Pants is one of my favourite beers ever, om nom nom. Summer Ale was decent but too light tasting for me.

    • Summer is floral and hoppy. Steam can be patchy, but an easy drinking pale ale. Hightail has a bigger malt bill, so much maltier than the others. Pale ale is a bit more of a resinous ale, my second fave after summer.

      Good value at $15.

    • +1

Their Summer Ale is Galaxy hops in a blonde ale style. Fancy Pants Amber was fantastic

  • Asahi is $21, 4 Pines is $17, Mountain goat is $16 for the whole range. You beat me to posting by a few minutes!

    • +1

sorry but those are nsw prices :(

      • Didn't know the deals were state specific. Damn. Thanks for info though.

        • NSW Container Deposit Scheme :)

        • +1

Return and scam is responsible for the increased prices in NSW. Such a joke of a scheme, it needs to be abolished ASAP.

        • @nubzy:

          So… 6x10c = 60c but the price difference is $1. Scam.

Plus fuel to drive and return cans…

        • @RtN: nsw ballsed up the deposit scheme by adding some extra tax.
But saying that in SA the price diff to other states isn’t always the number of containers, so retailers have a say in what price is too by skimming that little extra knowing people will blame the deposit scheme.

        • +2

          @nubzy:

          Why?

Places that have had the deposits for a long time have seen reduced litter from bottles/cans and recycling rates over 80%. Both are good for the environment.

Before NSW introduced deposits about 50% of all waste was recyclable containers that went to landfill

        • +2

@RtN: Suppliers got charged more than 10c (initially more like 13c). The extra is to fund the cost of the scheme.

Cost to suppliers is a changing figure over time as more/less containers get redeemed (less than 8% currently!!!!) and they change the fee to producers. With that uncertainty it makes it damn hard for suppliers/retailers to work out what the hell to charge cusomers.

NSW already had 80% of containers being collected for recycling, so this BILLION dollar extra tax on customers is almost pointless anyway. And then we just truck most of it up to QLD to be dumped in landfill. What a fkn joke.

          Only winners are Cleanaway Corp…

        • @tonester:
The Return Scheme so far has paid for my 2 x Raspberry Pi's. ;-)
Not too mention not having to pay extra to upgrade our recycle bin (Too many beer bottles).

        • +1

          @dtpearson:

          initially more like 13c

          Initially is not current.
          Now it is about 11c

NSW already had 80% of containers being collected for recycling

No, that is the target the scheme wants to achieve.

        • +4

@spaceflight: I am all for recycling, but this is a scam plain and simple. If it was 10c on each container, 10c back then sure. But we are being charged significantly more than $2.40 extra on a carton of beer (they have gone up $4+ per carton) and only get 10c per container back at best. There are far too many conditions attached (bottles/cans must be pristine/labels in tact), the machines reject containers sometimes for no reason, there are not enough machines available (people have to drive 20+ mins then wait in a que). It is a great waste of peoples time, there was nothing wrong with the recycling bins. Who wants to hold onto stinking beer bottles for weeks on end then waste time + petrol driving to a vending machine to get back half your money. As if alcohol wasn't expensive enough in this country as it is. Even a bottle of soda water went up from 75 cents to 90 cents. It's a very poorly thought out scheme.

        • +1

@spaceflight: And Japan simply got rid of its bins and still sells Asahi cans for next to nothing and is a million times cleaner than Australia.

        • +2

          @nubzy:

If you are being charged more then blame the retailer/manufacturer/distributor for using the scheme as a way to increase profit by increasing prices more than they need to.

Conditions are okay otherwise you could take in a can cut in half and get 20 cents instead of 10.

People are obviously waiting in the queue because they think the effort is worth it for the gain they get.
If you dont want to wait then put them in the recycling bin and miss out on the refund.

You dont have to make a special trip to get a refund. Do it when you go shopping or something so you are not using extra petrol.

        • @Risto:

And there are plenty of countries with bins everywhere but massive litter problems.

Japan's culture to waste is very different.

        • @hbg:

Lol, well you would have saved enough for 3 Raspberry Pi's if the whole scheme was non existent.

        • @spaceflight:

You dont have to make a special trip to get a refund. Do it when you go shopping or something so you are not using extra petrol

When I was in Nth NSW over Chrissy, the tax was charged but the nearest bottle return was 45min drive away.

The euros had the best idea. Stores which had a collection machine which spat out a voucher credit for that store. A so basically most stores had them as they got the money flowing back.

        • @Risto: I remember walking around Japan munching on some food then literally had the rubbish in my hand for about an hour looking for a bin. Then I noticed no one walks around eating food.

        • +1

@OneMoreTune: Just got back today. The 7-11 stores usually had bins. Thankfully!

        • @Risto: You lucky duck, or maybe it's unlucky now your home lol
I couldn't find any around the train stations or in the streets.

        • @watermelonbrain: I would have drank all that Beer & Pepsi Max anyway. :-)

        • @hbg: You would have saved all the money from the price rise due to the scheme (ie the amount you got back + the management fee). Management fee = 3rd Raspberry Pi lol

    • asahi is $20 in TAS

      • Many things are cheaper outside of Australia…

  • Pimm's Bottle for $31 is a good price

    • -1

Is it just for the bottle or does it include the drink?

  • +13

Dan's beer deals are getting crappier & crappier

Price of buying a slab over the years has been pretty much the same, but their 'specials' are about 50% more expensive…

    • +2

Yes I remember buying the mountain goat for $12…. not even that long ago.

        • +1

Still, 25% increase over that period.
          Has a slab gone up 25% ??

        • -3

@jv: 20% increase (to $15), plus an extra dollar for the container deposit scheme actually.

        • +2

          @Meconium:

Nope. If something is $12, and the price increases to $15, it’s a 25% increase

    • -1

It that why your comments have got better & better?

  • +1

Been waiting for a deal on Asahi cans but $21 for 6 is not a good deal considering a case $72.95. Looks like I'll have to wait till I go to Japan in April.

  • On a side note Aldi, have a decent 12pack pale ale atm, $17-18 for 12 beers. It's called 'North by North' (or something similar)

    • What does it taste like? Can you compare it with the bridgeroad beechworth pale ale?

      • What does it taste like?

        Beer? I hope…

        • +2

Ok thanks, some say the Asahi bottled version taste like piss so not all beers taste like beer. To be honest I don't even know what piss taste like cos I haven't drank piss before.

        • +2

          @Homr:

Try some, you have it on tap. Can not get any fresher

        • @Homr: Did you just thanks that? lol

      • i'd be amazed if any aldi beer is close to bridgeroad stuff!
my previous experiences with aldi have been pretty average but can't say i've tried this specific one.

      • I'm a hop head. I tried the Aldi "pale ale" and it is more like a lager than an ale…

  • +1

I've had the hop house in Dublin, it's quite good.

    • +1

Sounds like a dance club but I'll give it a go.

      • For one legged people…..or knowing the Irish and their penchant for a beer or two those that are legless.

    • Is it a Fruity lager?

  • No deal on the Mountain Goat Surefoot Stout?

  • Ooh, how to choose! Reckon a combination of the:

    • Mountain Goat Summer Ale
    • Mountain Goat Fancy Pants or
    • 4Pines Indian Summer Ale

These cans would go down nicely for camping, but which two would you choose and why?!

    • +1

Not the 4 Pines. Had it on tap the other day. A very average tasting beer.

    • Fancy Pants. Excellent taste

  • +1

Mountain Goat the pick of a fairly average bunch.

As others have said, I'd give their Organic Steam Ale a miss. So bland it isn't funny.

  • I have been waiting more than a year for Aldi or DM to bring back the deal $15 for a 6 pack of Asahi Super Dry Cans 500ml.

  • Went to DM for these offers but went home with St Archer IPA's which where near the best before date. $10 for 6 pack, can't go wrong!

    • +1

      An old IPA? That's risky

      • Its more than a month before the best before date and it still is good.

        • Cans or bottles?

        • @Fobsessive:
          They're in cans.

        • @jobski: I thought with IPA's the fresher the better?

        • +1

@jobski: I'll leave this here, a couple of trips to the shop in the last week.

Biggie Juice is my No.1 so far

        • @OneMoreTune:

Nice selection of beers you got there!

Yes they are, just couldn't resist at that price.

Tried MO's new leopard session ale last night (tap), its good too. BJ wasn't available when we went to Feral's pub a few months ago, might have a hunt at the shops.

  • Fancy pants $16?

    • For NSW schmucks, yes.
