Warranty on Phones Purchased off eBay/Gumtree etc

Hi, I'm thinking of purchasing a Pixel 2 XL off gumtree or ebay and wondering how warranty works? I'm nervous because my previous two nexus devices each bootlooped after 12 months and I was able to get full refunds using the ACL. How does it work if someone else's name is on the invoice, especially if they bought the phone on a plan? AM I left with only the manufacturer's warranty?

Any advice or experience appreciated.

    i bought a Pixel 2 off Gumtree a month ago that had speaker issues, took it back to point of purchase (Telstra) and since i had the proof of purchase that the seller gave me they went through their usual warranty process and replaced it the next day. didn't matter that it was someone else's name on the receipt letter. as far as i'm aware, Australian warranty law covers you even when you're not the original buyer, as long as you can provide proof of purchase from the original store, so make sure the seller gives you that. edit: i'm assuming this only applies when the store is Australian too of course.

    that's store warranty of course. manufacturer warranty i'm less sure about; before i took it into Telstra i got in touch with Google who told me i also had the option of replacing my phone through them directly, at the inconvenience of waiting two weeks for a replacement (hence i went with Telstra). whether they'd need to see proof of purchase or they'd have just replaced the faulty phone anyway, i'm not sure, someone else could help with that.

  • How much are you REALLY saving by buying off gumtree? You don't know the history of the phone, whether they are doing an insurance scam job (say they "lost it") get cash, sell phone = extra profit.

    If you are saving under $200 I wouldn't bother. If it's more than $250 off the (on sale) retail price I'd question where it came from.

    The name on the receipt should be irrelevant. A receipt is a receipt and as long as the IMEI Have them give you a sold receipt. E.g

    I <their name> am selling my Pixel 2 XL, IMEI <here> to <your name>.

    Sold for <amount$> on <Day / Month / Year >

    Signed

    <Their name / signature>

    <Your name/signature>

    Keep the original, scan it and send a copy to them.

    Just to make sure if there's an issue and the store tries to get out of the ACL you can show them that. If they try any dodgy stuff with insurance you can come along with that.

    Ideally I'd be purchasing from someone who bought it at Harvey Norman or Officeworks or JB (i.e a physical store). Even a Telco store.

    How does it work if someone else's name is on the invoice,

    hahahaha what invoice!?

    If you get an invoice, then you'll be fine, regardless of the 'name' on it.

  • Wait what if seller photo shop the receipt? Ie the the store name is fake ?

    • that would be devastating

      • Yeah it's easy to get sample of jbhifi receipt, scan then Photoshop then reprint. Done. See? I give you receipt of this samsung s8 I just bought last week, something wrong with the fingerprint sensor but just bring it back to the store theyll exchange it on the spot. I just too busy to go there that's why I sell this to you cheap. But actually 8 months grey import stock Samsung Australia won't touch it and the sensor is broken.

    There is no warranty on 2nd hand products, even if you get an invoice, alot of companies are not covering 3rd party warranties anymore.

    • Actually the opposite, many still but there are some won't honour if you are not the original purchaser
