Why Would The Internals of My iPhone 5 Be Different from All Other iPhones?

This is weird. I got one of those replacement kits to replace the screen on my wife's iphone 5s (model number a1457). The phone is water damaged. When I took the screen off, the phone was way different from just about every video I have seen on youtube, namely because:-

1) There was no ribbon cable attaching the home button to the screen. I dont see how I could have broken it and there would be no trace of it. The home button is simply sitting there on the mainboard.

2) There are no steel rails running along the sides. I can't see how I could have broken these off, I mean there's no fragments or anything.

I bought the phone off Kogan. Ive never known them to sell fake stuff before. Am I missing something here? Ive attached photos, below:-

I can't answer your question but as someone who has repaired a fair few of these units I've never seen one open up like that before!

You definitely removed the bottom 2 pentalobes and used a pry tool to get right beneath the display to separate from the body?

It's the iPhone 5W. The W stands for wireless internal connections :p

But seriously, that makes no sense…

I don't know what that is, but it's not an iPhone 5 (nor a 5s). The screen is totally the wrong design, the home button is totally the wrong design, the way the home button mounts between the body and screen is wrong (should be stuck to the screen)….that said, if it's a fake it looks like nice work?

    • I can't see how it would be a fake. I mean I bought it off Kogan. Plus, before it died in the arse it connected to the app store no problems, it definitely wasnt some skinned version of Android.

This is doing my head in, honestly.

You removed the wrong peace. You pride up the display, not the whole assembly. Better off to get a professional to fix it.

Yeah this looks like what has happened. I've had this partially happen when I opened up my iPhone 5 but managed to click it back into place before completely separating them. Hopefully OP didn't crack the digitizer (or whatever its called).

ah, yes. this appears to be true. Hmm, something tells me i should not give up my day job.

I've opened up an iPhone 5 and its not supposed to look like that. Only thing I can think of is that you may have broken off something when removing the screen.
If this is right then you'll find everything under that metal plate.

Praise Zeus, as per No Usernames' suggestion, I pried up the next layer of screen, and voila, it looked just like all the youtube tutes.

Even more amazingly, I replaced the screen, it actually appears to be working, AND I didnt lose any screws. This must be a first for me.

Lots of thankyous to all the responses!

  • you haven't taken it apart the right way bro.
you need to lift the white plastic that around the screen out.

  • Great that you got it working.
If it's any help Australia Post are clearing out their iphone SE.
The prepaid ones linked to Optus.
This was originally posted by someone in Sydney on Tues night, but the original post disappeared!
Earlier today I picked up the last one in East Victoria Park, WA.

    • Thank you. Having played with the phone wifi is not working and it has a couple other issues, so will definitely look into that.
