Please Suggest Me A decent UPS for Home Usage

Hi,

Please suggest me a decent home-use UPS battery system.

I'll be using it to power ADSL (soon to be NBN) modem, wireless router, camera, POE hub, and NAS.

Max total power usage: 200 watt (currently around 120 watt, but for future-proof, let's say 200watt)
Running for: 10 minutes (to allow NAS to shut down properly)
Battery: should be replaceable (for future proof)

APC calculator suggested me APC BK500EI; it would cost me around $129 from local shop

What do you guys think?

Don't forget to use code: SUMMER25 for $25 off.

  • I use this $99 CyberPower 600VA from Officeworks to power an NVR, 8 cameras and a netbook. It lasted about an hour before low battery alarm sounded when tested recently after 12 months since installation.

    • thanks for your response; do you know the number of load (watt) your NVR and netbook is drawing?

I just tried CyberPower calculator and it suggested me to get BR850ELCD 850VA 510W capacity and it can only last for 13 minutes on battery; plus the battery is sealed :(

      • My load is is around 60 watts of a daytime which works well for my needs (small load for an extended period). The VA rating is a bit misleading too as my 600VA unit has a rating of 360 watts. So yes, you will need something a bit beefier.

As for battery replacement I don’t think it would be difficult to find someone with the knowledge to do a change out. But given the price of these units with an expected life of 3 years +, it’s probably cost effective to replace it with a new one after the cost of a new battery and consideration of electronics reliability is taken into account.

        • Thanks for your response and providing me with your usage; at least now I know that I need more than what you have suggested.

          Have a good night!

  • We've got an Eaton and a cyberpower, both about 1200W, no problems. Think I got them at Umart.

    • Thanks for your response

  • Not too long ago there were dirt cheap Eaton 5SC1000's going on eBay new on auctions. Have a look there.

  • It may depend on the brand of your NAS.
I have a Synology NAS and I connect it via USB to my PowerShield UPS (Model = Defender 650). When the power goes out, the UPS can tell the NAS to shut down.
The UPS is also powering a modem and switch in my case and the 650W model is more than adequate.

So check which UPS's are compatible with your NAS

    • Can I ask which Synology NAS you have? I have the ds918+ and am looking to buy a UPS for it. The Defender 650 looks like it will cost about $120 or so after shipping.
