Cheapest You've Seen Flights Sydney to Queenstown NZ?

Planning a trip to Queenstown late July or early August
I have managed to previously book RT $400+ with Qantas and this was Queens birthday long weekend
Am I crazy or would it ever come down to $200+ with Jetstar or Virgin?
Whats the lowest fare youve seen for this route?
Thanks very much.

    • Doesn't get any cheaper than that!

  • $400 is a great price, you won't see direct fares Sydney to Queenstown for $200.

    • I thought that but haven't been paying close attention to this route. It's amazing how return flights to Singapore (8+hours) are frequently below $300 RT but a 3+ hour flight to NZ costs a lot more.

  • I'm pretty sure I've seen $260 one way during off-seasons (not ski season), but my memory can't be trusted.

  • This might get you close enough if you want to drive https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/363602 chep chep

    • Wrong dates for OP.

      • My bad!

    • Actually have not thought about that, there's 3 people so might be worth driving. Thanks!

  • Yeah queenstown always seems expensive to fly into, christchurch always looks much cheaper.

    • Yeh funny that.. might have something to do with the location.

      • Adult airport/security/govt taxes alone are about AUD$180 for a return ticket Australia to NZ. Varies by a couple of dollars only depending which airports flying in & out of.

Queenstown airport closes a lot during winter, sometimes all day or often flights are delayed, which can cause a multitude of problems. Airlines have to allow for risk of aircraft getting stuck there. Think the minimums for landing are less than for takeoff.

Imagine the costs if 150+ passengers can't take off. Some airlines will pay for their accommodation, if they can find that much accommodation at short notice(airlines have very low contract rates with hotels for such situations, but that doesn't mean they'll have beds) or offer them a 6 hour+ bus trip to Christchurch.
