According to Toms HW, this drive can have a different mish-mash of components

This product has a variable bill of materials (BOM), which means that the vendor can (and does) change the internal components regularly without changing the name of the product series. At least a few end users earlier in the release cycle received drives with a Silicon Motion, Inc. (SMI) SM2246XT controller and MLC flash. More recently, users reported the SSD Plus came with the SMI SM2256S controller and TLC NAND.

In case you're wondering what a DRAM-less SSD is, there's a pretty good explainer video that talks about the pros and cons of having this type of SSD.

      It’s all a conspiracy

omg i'm so woke red pilled now

i might be wrong - but does it really matter on a sata 3 connection? i would've thought that the difference between any current sata SSD would be pretty hard to see. when going nvme - the speed of the components would matter more.

The way I understand it, it only adds latency which would really only be noticeable in heavily random I/O. So Windows would take a little longer to boot. Still much quicker than a HDD for sure.

Its just a cheap line of drives, they use older technology and remove what they can, including in some cases warranty (this one still has three years apparently). They source the cheapest components they can get at the time, which is something that most manufacturers do if they don't make their own.

If you're broke and looking to get rid of that spinning rust drive, then go for it I say. If you want some really nice performance, then look into some NVMe drives.

It'd certainly spruce up an old, or cheap laptop.

        • I've got Intel600p NVMe in my desktop (Ryzen 5 1600 and 16gb DDR4 3200 RAM), Intel 535 240gb ssd in my laptop and they perform really well.
Having said that, I have also used couple of SSD Plus (3 x240gb) to replace hard disks in 3 of my mates laptops and have had no issues. In comparison to my desktop/laptop (using intel ssds) I don't see much difference in performance when booting a system up.

    • Wow, just realised I did something so stupid.

I thought the SSD warranty was only for 2 years…

Opened mine up a few days ago when it died out because my set of screw driver from an ozbargain deal came, and had the dead ssd on my desk -_-

  • It's more expensive, but I would prefer the pickup a new Crucial MX500

  • Looking to buy one with ~500Gb. Hopefully a deal will pop up soon. :)

Personally I would spend the extra $13 bucks or so from previous deal and get a 850 evo. Faster and more reliable.

    • Basically came to ask this but I think I knew the answer deep down.

  • Would this work for PS4 HDD upgrade?

    • Generally, you would not want a 240gb SSD in your PS4. Firstly, it's too small. Second, and I may be mistaken, but I believe the improvement in load time/install time/boot time is negligible.

      • no question is too stupid :) i will google more

  • There's a cheaper deal found here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/363543, but this deal will still stay active.
