Ultrawide Monitor Suggestions

Hey all,

I'm looking for an ultrawide monitor purely just to connect my HP Envy laptop into to run a desktop environment which will be better for work purposes.

I know that reviews all go towards the same few units however I just want some opinions.
Hardly little to no editing of photos so not graphics intensive.

Curve or no curve?
New or refurb?
Inbuilt speakers yes or no?
1080P resolution or the 3440x1140

Criteria:
29-34"
IPS
Good port selection
1k budget

LG 34UM95C-P
LG UM59A
LG 29UM68
LG 34UB88
Dell Ultrasharp U3415
Dell Ultrasharp U2917W

What about Samsung ultrawide monitors?

Thanks

  • I'm also looking for a monitor upgrade. Been thinking about getting 3 of these LG 34UC99-W. Just waiting for eBay and Flybuys coupons to arrive. Are you planning on doing app design or ide environment type work?

    • Hi,
I won't be doing any app design on Ide work with it. Just thought that for work it'll be more real-estate to play with.

      3 LG 34UC99-W's that's intense might I say :)

      • Yeah, one for looking at my UI design and the second two run side by side so that I can extend my workspace, because for some reason in Visual Studio your workspace can't be zoomed out so you have to expand the window to view your design without scrolling. The third monitor is also great for Netflix or Spotify when using IDE.

  • 2x dell u2711

    • Loving the price. The reason I want to grab an ultrawide is so that there's no centre gap or border otherwise I'd love to. Unless you can convince me otherwise :)

  • Definitely the LG 34UB88. It's essentially the same as the more expensive LG 34UC99-W just without the USB Type-C connection. With a monitor greater than 27 inches it HAS to have a resolution greater than 1080p. It also has that beautiful IPS panel.

Curves don't make sense on TV's but on monitors it definitely makes it more immersive because you're closer to the monitor. I wouldn't suggest a curve though if you're doing design work and you need to have straight lines.

    • Thanks for your lengthy response Ryanek. With USB C becoming the norm, would that not be the wiser choice?

I'm not a designer or architect so don't rely on straight lines.

    • With 34U I don't think it HAS to have a greater resolution than 1080p, 34" on ultrawide is like 24 inch on 16:9, pretty standard but with more side space.

I would definitely get one with USB-C, definitely the future moving forward.

      • +1

I have to disagree. I'm not saying they don't exist but using a 34in monitor with a 1080 resolution is terrible. If you want to get an ultrawide its best to get a 3440 resolution.

USB C is great but with all its other connectivity options i'm not sure its worth the extra premium.

        • I would buy a 2K ultrawide though. But no point spending more if someone thinks 1080P is fine.

        • @plmko: OK, I can't stop you from recommending 1080p for an ultrawide monitor now matter how bad that advice is.

  • Would you guys suggest buying on eBay or like Centrecom computer stores?

  • Currently running on a LG 34 inch ultrawide 2560 x 1080p (LG - 34UC79G)
It a nice monitor, although its 1080p, its not to bad, cant see the pixels afar from my desk, but you can definitely see the pixels up close, I chose this monitor as it was on sale, its selling point was its 21:9 ratio and 144hz.

Best to see a demo of these monitors, choose one that fits your preference, happy with mine, but since your not looking to play games, maybe choose 1440p or stick with 1080p if it is fine, its all individual preferences

Also should add, is there any reason for ultra wide? 21:9 is nice, but the lack of native content, you might want to consider 32 inch 16:9

    • Hey,
I guess the reason for ultrawide is to have that two screen experience but with no centre border. And with that I understand that over some time is something I'd get used to all. You're right with lack of native content.

Which would you recommend at 32 inches 16:9 IPS wise?
