Returning an Item That I've Already Claimed GST Refund for?

Hey all,

So I bought an iPad mini 4 and claimed GST while on the way out of Australia for a short trip overseas. I bought this primarily to use with my Phantom 4 Pro drone but realised that they have a screen called crystal sky which is way better. I can still return my iPad mini 4, but what exactly happens to the GST I collected?

Do I then have to pay Apple back this funds or something? How this does work!?

Cheers

    Don't ask, don't tell.

    • also as per Duty free concessions:

If you are aged 18 years or over, you can bring up to AUD900 worth of general goods into Australia duty free.

  • You should have paid GST again if you brought it back into the country?

      should've.

Should've is a contraction that is generally ignored, I would suggest that you try to avoid that one. I definitely wouldn't try and call people up for not using it ;)

        • Should've's a contraction that's generally ignored. I'd suggest ya try t' avoid that 1. I defo wouldn't try'n'call people up f'not using it;)

      That isn’t how it works.

      • You are correct (as long as under 900), I already checked.

  • Sometimes they don't even bother to check when you come back, or just waived you even the item is more than a thousand dollars in value. . This whole trs is just a big loop hole. Don't worry unless you were claiming ten of thousands dollars.

  • YOu get to keep the GST money. simples

Some people are under the misapprehension that on re-entering the country you need to repay the GST.

This, however, is only the case when the total of the items are over $900 per person, $450 for kids. You can add the limits.

Will they even accept a return. It isn’t broken and appears to function, so it doesn’t sound like warranty. The store has a “change of mind” policy?

Sounds like you didn’t do your homework very well before you bought the iPad mini and now you want the retailer to refund you due to your bad decision. It’s a good retail shop if they will refund you for a used iPad on a “change of mind” return. I suppose you could return it on the “not fit for purpose” clause under the ACL.

Apple store has one of the best return policies. It's basically a change of mind policy and their sales people actually tell you that you can refund it no questions ask if your unsatisfied. https://www.apple.com/au/shop/help/returns_refund

Post isn't about whether I can or can't return a product. It's about this GST loophole.

      • Wow. That is actually quite interesting. Didn’t know that about Apple.
