Purchased a Data Recovery Software (DiskWarrior) Encountered Problem after Starting up, What Should I Do?

Hi everyone,

Recently I lost a few photos from my Mac and I searched CNET for the top 5 best data recovery software and It came up with DiskWarrior as their recommendation. I downloaded and paid for the software then installed on my mac, then as soon as I opened the software I was greeted with a message:

"Directory cannot be rebuilt because this is the startup disk"

I actually wanted a refund since the product has not worked as promised, especially when I've paid $132USD for it, also I wouldn't mind paying for it if I could actually use the software to scan my HDD. I don't know much about computer, so if anyone could help me I would much appreciated.

Carbon copy Cloner. Use this to create a bootable USB. Boot Mac from new USB then try the software again.

  • As above, OP boot off another boot device, so that the disk isn'tt the 'startup' disk, and you should be right.

Also install backup software. Google Photos is FREE for syncing photos to the cloud from PC/Mac/Phone. Do it.

    • Thank you! ill suss them out after work!

  • I have had the best results with recuva
It can deep scan and recover photos that you have deleted cleanly.
It takes a while but is easy enough and free.

Unfortunately this is a windows program and the files were lost on a Mac machine.

  • Also install backup software.

Or use the Time Machine backup that’s already on a Mac

    • I just got the MacBook so time machine wasn't activated (yet). :(

      • Out of interest what happened ?

Requires a separate disk……. So not free ;)

True. But for the cost of a portable hard drive that gives comfort knowing that you can restore files immediately and be able to due a reinstall without any real effort is priceless for me.

        • Don't disagree!

      • Good work contacting them before posting

  • I think its a security measure ,say you have a 1Tb hdd if you undelete files on your mac and it turns out the recovered files are also 1Tb, you may end up overwriting/deleting you current files and Os , to prevent this usually you have to recover to another hdd ..try Stella data recovery
