Help/Advice for Buying a Skeleton Watch

Hi all,

Can anyone give advice or a recomendation on buying a decent skeleton watch?

I know there are several cheapies from aliexpress etc, which I am happy to entertain, but reliability and workmanship is important - within a certain budget.

I can't afford a 2k watch. My budget may stretch to $500.

I was looking initially at Stuhrling watches. Namely these;

https://www.amazon.com/Stuhrling-Original-371-01-Automatic-G…

and

https://www.amazon.com/St%C3%BChrling-Original-Stainless-Aut…

However, reviews are mixed. I am reluctant to drop a fair amount of money from something overseas if it has a chance f breaking.

I have also looked at a few fossil watches.

Does anyone have a preference/recommendation for a skeleton watch that is preferably waterproof?

Thanks in advance.

    Don’t buy one

Honestly, buy a cheapy. I had a cheapo skeleton watch for years. Never lost time. Looked the same as most others. A cheap watch (unless faulty) will keep time as well as an expensive watch. And what are buying it for? An investment? To become a family heirloom? Or to wear it until you are bored with it and move on to something else and it sits in a drawer for eternity?

My guess is- Probably to tell the time - with a bit of style.

Trawl aliexpress. Look at the inexpensive watches. Buy one. Or better yet, find 2 inexpensive skeleton watches that you really like and buy both.

    • Bingo…. I am buying this as a functional watch - to tell the time, with style. Can you remember the watch that you had?

So, basically just find a cheap style I am after and go with it, right?

sorry, the watch I had was nearly 20 years ago.

yep, cheap with a style you like.

one of these for U$12.99 delivered looks ok

        • Wow…. yeah, 20 years is a bit long ago. Wish I still had my grand father's wind up mechanical watch. It was a timex, I think. Classic. Thanks for the link. I will dig around.

  • A bit gaudy really. I personally wouldn't buy a cheap version because it will look cheap - just get a normal dress watch and save up for a quality watch if you're set on that style.

    • Problem is some of the better watches are over 1k. I don't think that a watch (for me anyway) is worth that much. Maybe in the future, yeah, but for now, no.

http://www.good-stuffs.com/Sea-Gull-M182SK-skeleton-watch-au… I have one of these; I like Sea-gulls and have about 20. They usually come pretty accurate (within 20s/day). I open them up and tweak them to the COSC standard of -4/+6. Ask Jun to match this price, https://www.ebay.com/itm/SeaGull-M182SK-skeleton-automatic-m…. Jun is a well-known supplier to members of http://forums.watchuseek.com/f72/.

    • That's perfect information. Thanks. I will trawl around those sites and see what they have. Thanks again.

    • I've sent Jun a message and hopefully he will reply soon. His rep of watchuseek is mixed and quite funny. Seems typical of many China/HK sellers. Many people speak highly of the SeaGull so I will give that a go.

Thanks heaps for the links and info.

    • How do you tweak it?

I too would like to increase accuracy on a Sea-Gull.

Sturling isnt a brand big enough to warrant $225 usd or close to $300 aud delivered.

To be honest, skeletons arent a popular style and if you dont want to go the Seagull route then the cheapest that I feel is worth it is the Fossil skeleton automatics.

They should be under $150 aud from a B&M store and of course you have the support of an Aus. retailer.

Normally I wouldnt piss on Fossil but I actually have a few (that I essentially got for free) and they are decent for the money. I wouldnt ever spend any money on one but there's obviosuly worse buying out there.

    • Thanks for the post. I think you're right about skeletons not being popular. There isn't a large range out there. I think I'll be going the SeaGull route.

    • Don't like Chinese watches trying to be Swiss.

If I wanted a Chinese watch, I'd buy a Chinese watch like Sea-Gull.

So many of these Chinese watches trying to be Swiss like Era timepieces have so many red flags on their websites, and don't even tell you the movement.

  • A skeleton watch was just posted here.

    • That's huge!… That's what she said…

I've small wrists… Wash rinse repeat above comment. This would break my write… Wash rinse reoeat above comment.

I've made a purchase with Jun. The Sea-Gull m182sk found here

      http://www.good-stuffs.com/Sea-Gull-M182SK-skeleton-watch-au…

Jun never got back to me with a price match… Hopefully I get what I ordered anx won't have to deal with his online stereotype of being cantankerous😄.
