Need a Cheap, Quiet Power Supply. Any Good Suggestions?

Hi there Oz bargainers, I'm looking for a cheap (bargain) psu. Just after some suggestions.

The cheapest seems like msy but I'm open to other places like ebay.

My build -

Ryzen 1500x (with stock cooler)
8g 2400mhz ddr4 (wanting to upgrade to 16g soon)
Asus Gtx 1060 6g
Asrock ab350m-hdv
Crucial ssd 275g
Seagate 1tb sata
2 x 120mm case fans

Thanks in advanced, legends.

Buy the best Seasonic you can afford.

Alternatively the Antec High Current Gamer series are great.

Please don't just buy the cheapest POS you can find. The PSU is the only component in your PC that can literally destroy the entire thing.

Go for the Antec HCG as suggested by Rick. You might find it for a dollar or two cheaper than MSY and shipped to your door with the current 20% off tech eBay sale.

Coolermaster/Thermaltake may have improved in recent years but you might as well stick with the Antec HCG (Seasonic-made) track record. With Corsair you'll be paying for a brand name premium.

      • The other issue with brands like Thermaltake and Corsair is that they don't build their own PSUs, so while one line will be built by Seasonic and be rock solid, others may come from less reputable builders and have issues.

www.jonnyguru.com is a great resource for PSU reviews and general info.

    • How about this one….
Antec NEO ECO CLASSIC 80+ Bronze 550

$84 from msy. Or just spend the extra $15 and get the gold rated

    What's your budget?
Do you need cables to be semi-modular?
Any plans for upgrades to more power-hungry GPU?

Using a PSU Calculator, you shouldn't need a super powerful PSU based on your current build so it just depends on what features you want/need.

Something like this Corsair VS350 for $44 at MSY can do the job if you just need something cheap and don't care for other things.

Whatever you do, don't get a cheapo no-name one.

    • My budget is preferably under $80.

Oh I forgot to put I have a cooler master masterbox lite 3. So a small case.

I use the computer for mainly gaming but sometimes I leave it on overnight to download stuff. So maybe a power efficient one might be a good idea.

My budget is preferably under $80.

You're not far off from being able to buy a 'excellent' power supply.

Under $80 dollars will get you something average-good, but if you can spend say $99 for instance, MSY is selling the Antec Earthwatts Gold Pro 550 watt power supply, which is using Japanese capacitors (the good stuff), uses Hong Hua bearing fans and is produced by Seasonic.

It also has semi-modular cabling. It's also one of the cheapest 'Gold' rated power supplies you can buy from MSY.

  • Thanks for all the info guys. I also forgot to add I have a mini atx case.

    Cooler master masterbox lite 3.

I don't know if that should make a difference.

Also I mainly use it for gaming. But I also leave it on over night sometimes to download stuff.

    So maybe something energy efficient.

No difference, mini ATX and regular ATX cases just demands a differently sized motherboard. Every other component stays pretty much the same.

Most of the PSU's on the market are just regular ATX standard.

  • Not exactly cheap, but hdplex 160w is quiet.

    • What is that? Is it a some sort of external PSU or something?

      • That's a Nano-ATX power supply, a very small PSU for low power desktops.

        • Oh, well that seems like a silly recommendation when OP could fit a full sized atx psu into it. But it's nice to know in case I need one in the future.

I was expecting it to somewhat act like one of those 5.25" gpu power boosters

  • There is a tier system for PSU's that can be found here
Tier one is usually overkill, two represents very good quality for gamers or powerful systems while tier three is good value for money.
Dont get anything below tier three. Most I recommend are tier two and no problems with them at all.
Based on your specs you would only need ~500w PSU and should be ~$100-$150 with ebay 20% off sales.

    • I think this list is a bit exaggerated. Anything 80+ bronze certified PSU from a reputable brand should be good enough. Many of the Tier 4 and 5 PSUs are in this category actually.

      • Sorry this one was more along the lines of what I was thinking.
If you are just using it for work then a bronze should be fine but for gaming or intense work a gold/plat one would be recommended.

    • Maybe I got unlucky or something, but I have a CM V-series psu which is a tier 1 from that list.

First one crapped itself after 10 months of use.

Second one crapped out after 2 weeks of use.

Third one crapped out after I turned it on for the first time.

Fourth one has been fine for about 1 year now.

I honestly should've asked for a refund after the 2nd one crapped out. Even with my bad experience with a tier 1, that tier list is probably still a decent guideline

Never cheap out on your power supply. Get something with a good reputation for reliability.
