Please Find Me a Deal on 4TB SMR HDD or Similar

Hi data-hoarder master :)

I'm about to implement the 3-2-1 backup rules (3 copies of data, 2 different media, 1 offsite).

At the moment I have 8TB NAS (Raid 1), and out of that 8TB, 4TB is the real data (the rest are ISO files).

What I need is:

  • 2 x 4TB drives to alternate the backups (in case drive failure, etc)
  • Minimum 3 years warranty

Note: The SMR drives seem to start from 8TB, plus its price too expensive to have two, so I think best to start with 4TB for now

I've noticed eBay currently has 20% tech sales and saw this deal is not too bad:
- WD Caviar Red 4TB for $171.2 after 20% discount => which translated as $42.8/TB

What do you guys think? should I go buy this?

Thanks heaps!

I don’t know, but maybe look for a bargain on the word please first.

  • SMR drives have have really bad rewrite speeds. They are designed for write-once, read-many usage scenario. You will be backing up for days unless you reformat them at every backup cycle.

    • Fair point! Might as well go with normal NAS HDD then..
