pfft, https://syncthing.net/ is open source and always free. I've been using it for a few years now for work. Syncing folders over the internet and locally.

One important feature for me is that it must sync file properties like RW or RO states. Syncthing does it perfectly. Not many others do.

Does it compare and identify files based on the size and properties even if their names are different?

      • Why would it do that? wouldn't it just change the name of the file so that it is the same in both places?

        • +2

What you are talking about is only syncing the files between two directories. I think this is more of a WinDiff kind of app.

        • @gentlecrack: So it hashes the two files to check they're the same? That sounds like a lot of work to pick up files that may have changed! Rarely would i expect a simple rename is super common that going to that effort is needed. I'd be happy for the backup to simply delete the old file and recopy.

@incipient: No so useful if you are actually moving photos to a directory that already has a file with the same name, but it's actually a totally different photo. I think hashing dupes is vital.

Windows Defender reported setup.exe to be: Trojan:Win32/Vigorf.A

    • Which antivirus do you have? I have Avast and it was fine.

Also to be sure, I checked online with Kaspersky Virus Desk and Virus Total and both reported it clean!

  • Is it better than dsynchronize ?

    • +1

I use DSynchronize from PortableApps and am happy with it.

      • +1

Agree especially you don't need to install, just copy the single exe file.

    what about freefilesync?

    • I use Free File Sync for backups .. and so far have been very impressed with its functionality and speed.

  • Not sure, as I have just started using the product. They have a comparison with WinDiff in their own site and another one in tom's guide. And a list of awards the product received. Doesn't hurt to download and try before the trial period is over.
