    • Thanks, ordered a set. Hoping it handles the long run to get data upstairs. The cheap edimax set I have drops packets like crazy.

      • They will most definitely cater to your needs. I have a pair and they've been great for the 1.5 years I've had them.

    • Stop it; I'm going broke here.
Bought one for AU $129.20; cheers

FWIW, I just upgraded from an AV500 TP link to this and it was a noticeable speed improvement. Great piece of kit.

Oh, if you mix a slower AV500 or AV1000 in your setup with this pair, you end up going the slower speed. So, if you're going to upgrade, upgrade all units.

  • +2

Recently upgraded from AV1200 to this one, no longer seeing a bottleneck for 100mbit fibre.

I got mine using PRONTO code, and it was down to $122.40

  • I always wonder what they mean by "2000Mbits", because it has nothing to do with the observed bandwidth of these devices. Perhaps, on average, each packet is transmitted 40+ times to get it through?

    • +1

The advertised speed is only the maximum theoretical connection speed of the signal processor. So 2000mbps is the maximum rate the kit can talk to each other.

The real data rate is determined once you take into account the various other factors; condition of the wires, signal to noise ratio, the line distance, the number of powerlines you are already using, the colour of Donald Trumps underwear and other things.

In the networking world, the word 'theoretically speaking' gets thrown around a lot, so speed claims on networking equipment should be taken with a big pinch of salt.

      • ROTFL

      • True, but it sounds like you work for NBN Marketing.

    • The have an app that runs on Windows that can tell you what your actual throughput is. Mine report 1500Mbit/sec typically. Keep in mind that the ethernet ports on these are gigabit (1000/Mbit/sec), although they do have 2 ports. Very happy with mine.

On a note, the plugs point downwards, so if your GPO is low on the ground, this wont fit!.
I went Tp-link AV1000 as i needed the ports to be pointed up.

  • Non-techie guy here. We live in a 2-storey townhouse and wi fi signal sucks upstairs. Will this help my issue if I want to improve wi fi signal upstairs? Thanks in advance!

    • +1

      Absolutely.
You need another wifi router though.
So you plug this one near to the router downstairs, and plug the other one near to the other router upstairs.
Configure the router upstairs to act as a hub only, by turning off DNS.

If you only need internet upstairs (no in house movie streaming) then just get the cheaper options with WiFi built-in.
The reason is because internet usually has low speed around 20-40Mbps. 2000 Mbps is overkill.

      • Thanks for your reply bud! We would like to be able to watch netflix and youtube upstairs. Will this suffice for our purposes?

        https://www.catch.com.au/product/tp-link-av500-wi-fi-powerli…

There might be an option to wire the TV to the adapter upstairs incase that makes it faster.

        • +1

Certainly will. Even the old 200 series is enough. The limit will be your broadband.

The linked devices are an older wifi/EoP range extender.

There are faster EoP devices out there for less, and these are limited in their WiFi abilities.(older n standard, limited throughput)

You might want to go for this one as it is under $84 dollars with PICK5 code

          https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/252946197014

It has an extra $20 woolworths voucher. Not bad value. It has been seen cheaper, but still pretty a good bargain.

        • @Magus: That sounds good then. If you can suggest a powerline adapter that we should use, that would be great.

Last question, I have a port in our room upstairs but a friend has informed me I can't simply connect another modem and router upstairs and set up a separate network to the main one downstairs. Is this correct? Is powerline adapter with built in wifi the best option for us?

        • @scrimshaw: Thanks for this but I cannot see if it has built in wifi. Wouldn't I need another router upstairs if I use this?

        • @sigplay:

Yeah, you'll need to buy a router.

If you want something with built in Wifi, look for the TL-WPA4220KIT

          https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-TP-Link-TL-WPA4220KIT-300MBP…

It comes to $84, so it's the same price as the one I previously suggested. But no Woolworth's voucher.

        • @scrimshaw: thanks for the suggestions. I prefer the one with built in wi fi so most likely I will get this item instead. thanks again for your help!

        • @sigplay: that AV500 may work, it depends on the distance from one power point to another.
The best bet is the AV2000 with wifi router.

        • @boohooimissout: distance is a maximum of 15metres between the potential adapter location. wifi signal sucks because it has to go through the floor of the upstairs bedrooms. do you think the AV500 with built in wifi will work well if we want to stream netflix and youtube videos?

        • @sigplay: the distance is measured by cable length, which you probably can't know about, unless u have the electrical blueprint.
Sorry, I'm not sure, because the 500Mbps is theoretical maximum, that is in lab condition with perfect quality wire, with length as minimum as possible, the speed is 500Mbps.
If your building is old, and the distance is a bit far, then best bet is the AV2000.

        • @sigplay: If your building is new. I find newer buildings uses Cat6 cable for phone wire, because they are just as cheap.
If you have phone sockets upstairs and downstairs, hire electricians to make these cat6 cables connected to your router.

If you do that, you will have 1Gbps network everywhere.

        • @boohooimissout: the townhouse is about 4years old and from memory, it looks like it is a cat6 socket (ethernet cable can be plugged in). IF it is cat6, then does that mean I can connect 2 routers without using powerline adapters?

        • @sigplay: Basically phone sockets are connected to phone line outside.
You need to hire electrician to separate that connection, so u have some sockets that is for phone, and some that can be connected to your router.
If you are daring, you can pull the sockets out (see youtube), and see if the cable looks like cat 5 or 6, it's written on the cable.
cat 5 and 6 are very similar.

        • @boohooimissout: Thanks for the clarification! I will see if I can get this done as I have a number of other stuff to do for the house. But thank you all for the input. Quite a lot of new information from this conversation alone! Need to do further research myself :)

        • @sigplay:cheers mate, let me know by private message how it goes!

  • I have the TP-Link TL-PA9010P kit which is identical to this one apart from having only 1 gigabit port instead of 2. Works great in my apartment.

  • Just a heads up. You can install the TP-Link powerline utility called "tpPLC"

In the program, click the "advanced" settings menu and you can choose to disable the power saving mode. The power saving mode when enabled can sometimes be a bit of an annoyance as it puts the unit on standby when it detects no network activity, but it takes a while for it to realize when there's activity again.
