• Voted Top 100 in the GABS Hottest 100 Aussie Craft Beers Poll

Tasting Notes
The brief Pirate Life gave themselves for their flagship beer was that it should be able to be sent to any bar in San Diego and to stand proudly alongside the many great Pales produced in, and around, the west coast of the US. The schematic for a West Coast Pale Ale is bucket loads of big US hops, full malty backbone and a characterful yeast. That is what this Pale Ale is all about.

Best before Sept 2018. Drink fresh!

pirate life …. normally $95 a slab …….. how apitly named for robbery …..

  • +2

It's a very nice beer, but definitely overpriced.

  • +3

Lol like nahhhhh I'd rather walk the plank and find some washed up rum

$85 for 24 cans is a bargain? nah

Pirate life is great, but since it was bought out I refuse to buy it.

While its not exactly any kind of mind blowing deal, given that its generally around $25 a 6 pack, the comments are typical of the average aussie beer drinker. I assume most think something like Squires Pale Ale is peak beer and generally drink euro lagers and so forth.

      Hahaha! So true!
"Omg I love craft beer! My favorite craft beer is fifty lashes!!!"

      • +2

        Yeah pretty much.

Before the buy out Pirate life was very well regarded as one of the better independent brewers.

If anyone wants to try their good stuff before it potentially has a recipe change and goes to crap, I'd recommend grabbing their IIPA or Mosaic.

To be fair, the same guys are still running it all, so could be more of a ‘wait and see’ if the cash injection will change their ethos and beers.
For starters those same guys who started it all are overseeing the construction of larger brewery facilities, always in their plans but happening sooner. Could be interesting or it could be another loss to craft beer.

    For the IIPA maybe….

  • This or Thug Life Pale Ale?

    • Aka Stella - "Wifebeater"

Bargains are judged on the same item. Therefore as this is the cheapest slab of Pirate Life IPA around it is a bargain.

I don't get the people who stopped drinking Pirate Life since the takeover. Still the same beer, brewed by the same people.

Mosaic FTW but this is not far behind.

This is not IPA, it’s the pale ale

      • Oops, so it is. For me Mosaic > IPA > Pale Ale but pale ale still a good beer.

I think it's legit to want to support independent brewers. It's great to have so much choice in beers and a lot of the smaller breweries I know help each other out, share hard to get hops, etc. That's great for beer drinkers too. I think it's pretty inevitable that AB InBev will buy up a bunch of promising breweries, lock up as many taps with contracts as possible, and then crowd out the smaller guys. Happy to be proven wrong but there's already way too many taps wasted on Goose Island already IMO (due to a very aggressive, expensive push into the Oz market). I'd prefer to support the smaller guys - especially my local ones - regardless.

Back on point, I agree that the IPA is exceptional. The Pale Ale is not bad but there's a lot of better Pales around.

      • The IPA and the IIPA are heavenly

      • Good points there. I definitely support independent brewers as well, Kaiju make some of my favourites beers for instance and I love Jedi Juice, but while Mosaic stays the same recipe I'll keep buying it.

I guess I buy what I like first and foremost.

        • +1

Kaiju are absolute legends. They helped out another brewery last year with some hops they needed for one of their beers but couldn't get hold of.
