Cannot Plug Two Prong Plugs into Xiaomi Wi-Fi Smart Socket?

I just received my Xiaomi Wifi Smart Socket (https://www.gearbest.com/power-strips/pp_341431.html).

I was planning to use this to turn on and off my speakers which have an annoying coil whine, even on standby.

I have set up this Xiaomi wifi smart socket fine through the app and I just turn it upside down to have it plug into our Aussie sockets. However when I try to use my two prong plug that the speakers use, I can't seem to put it into the Smart Socket. I push hard and it seems like there's something blocking it.

However when I try to use a three prong plug, I can seem to push it in hard and fine.

I wanted to know from other people's experiences is it possible to plug in a two prong plug into these Xiaomi Smart sockets? Or is it only able to be done via 3 prong?

There's a gate that covers the earth pin, just push that up a little and it allows the two pin plugs to go in.
I do this when the socket isn't plugged into the mains.

    • Yeah this. I have a 2 pin fan with this problem. Once it's plugged in it stays there fine.

  • I have a piece of a toothpick in the earth slot which pushes down the catches allowing a 2 pin plug to go in. Perhaps not the official sparky recommendation though.

    • You can take the toothpick out once you have the 2 pin plug in. I would advise this :)

  • The earth pin on a 3 pin plug is longer than the other two, which makes the socket release the lock as you plug it in.

  • Yep, exactly. I use a mini flat head attachment on the screwdriver kit and that opens it up enough for me to plug it in.

Paperclip does it for me. I do it when the Xiaomi plug isn't plugged into the power. I push the gate open insert the 2 pin plug, then remove the paperclip and plug the plug in firmly.

  • They do actually move a firm push if it was standard Aussie socket you tilt the plug down slightly towards where the earth pin would be before you push through as it straightens it's enough to move the shutters out of the way. give it a try before sticking things into it.

We were always taught to do it that way you never know if some clown has wired something up wrong which happens at times even when not plugged into the mains and there are others pieces of kit attached.

Please never stick anything into a socket irrespective of which pin it is that is uninsulated.

The cover itself is a to help protect children from sticking things in and the amount of parents who take one of the plastic baby proof covers and use it upside down to bypass this is unreal.

  • I use a piece of software cardboard in the earth pin as I insert the plug when it's partially inserted I remove the cardboard. You should do this when the plug is not plugged into the wall so you are not electrocuted.

    • Ps. If using home assistant the sonoff S20 plugs with mqtt are better built although they are more bulky. The sonoff ones need to be flashed but I was able to over the air flash them via WiFi.

  • Are they trying to stop us plugging in two-pin plugs? If so, why?

Or is it just made for three-pin and this feature is a way to prevent children from poking things in?
