    Just get good brand https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/361937

For TV I don't want go with 2nd class brand. LG Sony Panasonic Samsung. It's cheap nowadays it's not like Apple vs the rest.

For TV I don't want go with 2nd class brand. LG Sony Panasonic Samsung.

What makes those brands any better than TCL?

      • My experience with tcl has been bad, though I haven't tried them in ages.

I remember the tcl TV I had for my n64/GameCube (and DVDs I guess, you know spare tv) simply had dumb design. Most annoying was the TV buttons didn't include a source button, and losing the remote prevented you from switching to AV.

We had a large one at work, and the problem with it was that universal remotes never seemed to work with it.

Finally, my father's tcl plasma suffered from horrible temporary image burn, caused the Wii to display the left and right sides on the wrong side, and had 2-3 second lag on ps3. No game mode. Foxtel box had same lag.

So I wouldn't take the risk.

Edit: First TV mentioned was actually a "Toyoda" brand TV, not tcl. Probably don't need to tell people to avoid the Toyoda brand.

Also, is tcl an Australian brand?

It sounds like you're referring to TVs owned over a decade ago, a lot of improvement can happen in that time, and I believe they definitely have improved, along with most main-stream television manufacturers.

TCL is a Chinese brand and currently the 3rd best selling company in global sales.

          Current reviews are extremely favourable.

        • @Lorindor:
Yeah, the most recent mentioned was my father's TV, which was probably 2007ish.
Still, put me off the brand.
I'm the same with LG - won't touch them after a terrible run of DVD players, a TV, and fridges. Many love the brand but I've already been burnt to much.
My father's replacement to the TV mentioned is an LG curved OLED, and it's always had problems with the "smart" features.

Consumers are silly if they think they're getting a better tv because of the brand.
Many of the components that are used in these non 2nd class brands are manufactured in china.

      • That's not really true. Heard plenty of issues about kogan, braun, and old Hisense TV's.

Most brands have their differences. The hardware may no longer be much different, but their is much more to TVs. Samsung have the best led displays hands down - but I hate the interface and software.
Sony are all around excellent to me, with easily the best post processing available.

Hisense have good TVs now, but post processing tech is pretty shitty.

People need to look beyond the spec sheet when comparing TVs. The brand does matter.

TCL offer a 3-year manufacturer warranty on this item. Panasonic can only offer 1-year.

Hisense have a 3-year in house replacement warranty.

Find a non 2nd class brand that that can offer the same consumer guarantees for the same price.

          @whooah1979:

I've never had any TV of any brand need extended warranty.
The warranty doesn't magically make the TV better.

        • +1

          @Salmando:
But it speaks volumes for their confidence. If Panasonic were good, then extending warranty to 3 years should cost them next to nothing, yet they don't.

        • @Salmando:

I've never had any TV of any brand need extended warranty.

extended warranty is normally an add-on guarantee offered by either the retailers (third-party insurer) or in some cases the manufacturers at a cost to the consumers.

brands like tcl and hisense has done away with this by providing their consumers with a longer consumer guarantee and at more competitive price.

        • @Salmando:

The warranty doesn't magically make the TV better.

i never implied that a longer consumer guarantee makes for a better tv.

don't be fooled by the brand. over 40% of lcd tv manufacturers outsource. many brands are sourcing the same components from a few dozen factories and then outsource the assembly.

        • @whooah1979: as someone mentioned, parts don't mean shit by themselves.
Besides the fit and finish (very important) the proprietary software used is what makes the TV better. Big brands often have better software because they can afford the best developers.

Big brands very often earn their position, and buying a cheap TV with the mentality that they are the same is no way to get quality products.
TCL may be a good brand these days, but I've never heard much good about them.

Hi-sense started out really shitty, but I've heard enough good things about them now to consider buying from them. Word will spread, they'll become a bigger more respected brand, and finally you won't buy their TV because the cheaper Soniq TV is also made in China, so it must be identical to you.

Anyway, again, my history with TCL has had them producing inferior TVs to the bigger brands. They've always worked, and no hardware issues, but they've failed to live up to the quality of brands like sharp, Samsung, Sony, etc..

        • @Salmando:

TCL didn't retain their 3rd place in global market share for no reason, it's very true they can't compete against Samsung and LG, but that's about it. It has been the one of the only brands alongside HiSense that's been consistently increasing market share over the past decade,Samsung did increase their market share but they had a fall in 2009, then again in 2010.

I'm not saying they have top notch quality, especially regarding the image quality, but their reliability is definitely one of the best.

      • +1

        Top compenents are important, agree.
But who put them together is also important, as they don't disclose all other components. They might use the same panel but bad soldering and cut cost at other components that seems not important but decrease the whole performance.

Example is Chinese tablet. Chuwi etc. They use all the amazing glorious specs and photos. The review? So so. Issue with Wifi, hot battery, etc etc.

        • Wrong example, almost all Chinese tablets don't have top quality components, they are as generic as it gets to cut cost.

        • @levizx: hmm maybe Chinese mobile phones are more suitable. They said Sony camera sensors yeah right still the picture quality are so so

        • @dragonindespair:

Not so much either. Sony is a big brand with many sensors on offer. Chinese brands tend to use the cheaper ones and not the good ones such as IMX362 (cheaper version of IMX333 used by Samsung) or IMX377/378 if they use Sony at all. More Chinese brands just use OV or Samsung.

    • I got a 51" Soniq Plasma Refurb for $350 4 years ago. The remote control stopped working after a month and Soniq said I could have refund or just deal with it. Best $350 I ever spent.

    • +2

I think hisense tcl are like 2nd class and the aldi, bigw and soniq etc are like 3rd class.

in saying that im huge fan of hisense and tcl and i think they are pretty close to the "1st" class but you pay less.

  • How's this versus the P20US series?
