Looking for a small compact travel camera. Used to own one of the older Ixus but the camera decides to throw it in.
Am looking at the Canon IXUS 285 HS because of its small lightweight compact size.
Anyone has any experience with this camera, OR if you would like to recommend a similar type of small compact size camera that beats this Ixus out of the water, would like to hear from you.

I have an older version of the Canon Ixus camera. It's a good all rounder. It's easy to slip it out of the pocket, take a quick shot, put it away and continue with your sightseeing. The HS sensor certainly performs much better in low light than my sister's cheaper Canon compact.
I haven't used a Sony compact. Sony make good cameras so I expect the image quality will be at least as good.
On all of these compact cameras you can expect the image quality to drop off when you are at high zoom. Note that premium compacts like the Sony RX 100 series only have 3-4x zoom lenses.
I suggest you go to a shop and handle both cameras to see which feels better to you. Also pay attention to the ease of use of the menu systems. I've found Canon's menus to be easier to use than other brands I've tried.
When I switch from using my phone to the Canon Ixus I find the facial recognition isn't as good. The current models may have improved in this regard, but pay attention to that feature if people shots are important to you.
After staring at Google and youtubes, I'm slowly creeping up the price ladder from canon g9x m2 to g7x m2 to Pana lx10

I use a dslr mostly but I have an old ixus as my small point and shoot and I like it. It's about 4 years old now but I would likely replace it with the new version when it dies.
Use snapsort.com to compare the two cameras. It can help narrow down decisions.
