If you don't have a problem registering with CASA, you might want to do the free Operator Accreditation. There is free material to teach you the rules and the test is really quite easy if you know the rules. I got the accreditation the same day I decided to apply. It lets you fly up to 2kg drones for work (and up to 25kg over your own property), and it lets you supervise kids flying drones. You have to do it every 3 years though.

Another good option is to join an r/c club. If you do that you can't use your drone for any kind of work but you can fly for fun and you don't have to register your drone.
I don't like that it's become this regulated but unfortunately that's where we are.

Da choppa is only good with iOS in my experience. It used to be really easy but Android doesn’t seem to work without a lot of effort now. I would recommend to go buy a iPhone 5s for $30 or less on marketplace.
And make sure the iPhone is not icloud locked, given it's more likely the cheaper the phone gets.
