Spray Paint Your House Number on Garbage Bin?

Hi,

This is possibly just a question. Is it ok to paint your house number on the garbage bin, especially does the council like it or fine you.

I have seen my neighbours doing it, but who wants a fine from council for just doing something for fun. I am in Melbourne if that helps.

I live in the garbage bin….

  • in our council area (Onkaparinga, SA), you actually own your bins.

  • i thought you paid for your bin ?

We've done it back home haven't been fined over 20 years

Every evening when I return home from work, I urinate around the entire perimeter of my property.

Put in lemon trees so it isn't wasted.

Just put the number on the bin, I don't think the council will give a toss. If you are at all concerned put the number one the back of the bin or inside the lid. I, assume, you are making sure you get the right bin when you take it home.

    • Yes, you got my problem. Also for some reason the driver picks my bin and always keep/drop it in my neighbours driveway.

the driver ain't goin' to care what number is on the bin anyway; they will leave it where they drop it. The number does help though, one of our neighbours wandered off with our bin and then trundled it back to us later in the day (they had, obviously, seen our number on it).

  • I always thought i am renting one and any damage to that will be costing me a repair

    • renting? kind of - it's called rates.
Brisbane City Council don't try to charge. They even provide an online form detailing the problem, and by the next week the bin is repaired or replaced. Even took the rubbish that was in it.

someone stole my rubbish bin few years ago, so yes put your house number.

When they were first issued a huge number were stolen.

If they pinch mine they will get a smell that outlasts religion. No matter what sanitiser I use my bin still smells. It has probably impregnated in the plastic now.

      • a smell that outlasts religion

        5 years??

        • from your mouth to God's ears. He/She must be tired of the numbnuts who keep invoking his/her name and then do unspeakable things.

      • Bicarb soda… If it's not going away your just a bad cleaner lol.

I bought some waterproof/uv protected/reflective bin number stickers from eBay. It looks less ghetto than spray painting the number on them.

    • my mum has a full sized santa sticker on hers. Don't know what year she put it on, but it isn't coming off any time soon

  • ok, so i will put a number on the side, again just for fun and mark my property and stuff without any stink.

If i do anything crazy I will send you all above a free number stencil :-)

    Thanks All.

Your idea of fun is very different to mine…

    • Pretty sure they don't care. You could just use some vinyl cut numbers from the hardware store if you are paranoid, or if you want to be ultra-tidy. My council actually delivers new bins with the house number on in by using numbered stickers.

Mine has cricket stumps painted on it.

I put my house number on all my undies.

    • i put my telephone number.

      • Seriously, if someone has found your underwear you probably don't want them knowing your house number or your telephone.

I put number 2 on my undies

  • but who wants a fine from council

If they fine you, blame someone else for doing it.

  • Ring the council? These forum topics are getting worse and worse by the day!

  • Sprayed it on in big numbers years ago when the neighbours used our nature strip twice. Never got a fine.

  • Bins these days are coded so that councils can actually identify which address a bin was supplied to. That way if there's any honest dispute of ownership between neighbours, the council will know who the actual owner is. Not that the owner could necessarily identify their own bin by the code.

There have been cases where a bin has been found with a body in it and the coppers have traced the owner of the bin via the code. So if you want to go down that path, use someone else's bin, not your own.

Yeah OP, go ahead and put your house number on it. That's the easiest way to identify your bin and avoid neighbourly disputes, or if it gets blown down the road and you know which bin is yours. I've been doing it for at least 20 years. The council don't give a toss. Remember, you own your bin. If you somehow lose it, YOU have to pay for a new one - your council is not going to give you another one for free.

Only in some areas. In Our council area of SA. Council own the garbage bin and recycling and will replace them if they get stolen/damaged( done this twice in the last 10 years, but the green waste bin they supply to you but if it gets lost its your responsibility to replace it. I made up a stencil and have painted all our Bins with address

  • We have our house number on our bin and I also rapped glow in the dark tape around it so if any one tries walking of with it during the night they will be seen. It also stops people driving into it at night.

  • Email the council and have in confirmed in writing that it is not a problem.
