Step down Converter Help, What Are My Options?

I just picked up an NTSC Dreamcast and from the looks of things I need a step down converter 220v to 110v.

From a bit of research the console only uses 27w but is rated at 75w.

I see that you can get those from Jaycar

Are there smaller/cheaper ($49.95) alternatives to this?

Thanks for your help

  • This one may be suitable as it can handle 100W and about the same price as the jaycar one. Its an Australian made one from an Aussie company too!

The cheaper option may be to find a broken 240v PAL dreamcast on ebay and swap over the PSU into your one.

  • What about this? https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/100W-240V-110V-Step-Down-Up-Volt…

I haven't looked very hard, maybe you can do some research on ebay.

  • Bear in mind that the US uses 60hz power, and we use 50.. These cheap converters won't change the frequency, so make sure the power supply can handle 110v @ 50hz

    • The mains frequency won't matter because there's a SMPS inside the box, sadly not dual voltage it seems. The mains AC will be rectified to HV DC before being converted to LV DC by the SMPS.

  • Just be careful if you are going to buy one off eBay from China. Some are illegal and are a fire hazard.

  • Thanks for the help so far, is there a travel version or is the wattage too high for a normal travel adapter?
