Cheers, but I wish they would cut out this sales nonsense and just sell things at a sensible price all the time! Some of this stuff is 'on sale' more often than it's full price.

    • +1

I think the idea is to get you "hooked" on these products then you will feel the need to buy them even when they are not on sale - hence boosting their bottom line.

      • +11

Works the other way on me… no way I am buying a product when I know in a few weeks it will be back down to its normal price again :)

        • +9

Unfortunately, you're in the minority, and thus aren't the target market for these "schemes", which clearly explains your membership to this site :). You're still welcome to take advantage of it though, much like all of us here…

        • +9

When I see an item that I usually buy at a deep discount, I often buy a dozen or more (shelf or freezer space permitting). That's usually enough to last until the next round of specials, where I'll do it again. My Everyday Rewards card profile must have the 'tightarse' check box ticked, as I'll almost never pay full price :-)

        • +1

Same, when I see items I always use at half price I buy 6 months worth and forget about it until I've nearly run out.

        • +1

Hehe we need a OzBargain medal we can wear with pride, with a logo of a cheapskate. :)

Then again, if the shops see us coming, there'll be more Technology 505 calls. :)

          http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/36016

        • the strategy behind the discounting is both more subtle and yet more sophisticated than you give it credit for and it looks to me that its working

        • @jug_head: I'm sure the marketing gurus are cleverly manipulating us into thinking we're getting bargains. However, it's rather curious that some items can be discounted by 50% (Tim Tams come to mind) on a regular basis. Is the profit margin so large, or are they sold as loss leaders to hook people into buying them later at full price? I'm sure the gurus hope the latter occurs, but they fail with me :-)

        • There is a difference between outsmarting the marketing and being a smart shopper.

You may think you are outsmarting the marketing by buying in bulk and then waiting until its priced low again before you buy so you never pay full price. But in reality, you are being a smart shopper and probably about all you are doing.

what if FULL price was 50% off and FOOL'S price is RRP????

what if the marketers design pricing so you buy it every 2 weeks when its on special???
          Who is outsmarting whom then?

CLUSTER: I suggest that they are not failing with you but, rather, you are supporting them.

        • +1

@jug_head: I only buy the products I want and use, and won't buy anything simply because it's on special. Marketers don't like that. They want us to buy as soon as we see "Special" on the shelf. I won't buy an item every 2 weeks just because it's on special.

I look at matters a different way. I want a packet of biscuits. I can either pay full price, or plan ahead and pay half price. The retailer and marketer still make their margins and are happy to have sold the product, but they would be much happier if I paid full price. Special prices are not there because the marketers pretend to love us and want to give us a break. They want to sell us more, and preferably at the full price. I only buy what I need.

        • Cluster; i said 2 weeks but i could have said 2 months or 2 years, it matters not. If the discounted price got you to spend 10 cents once a year then my point is still valid.

What you are doing is being a smart shopper. Good for you. If everyone did what you did then certainly their objectives would be harder to achieve BUT you are still not outsmarting the retailer because you are still shopping from them. They know you do that and they can probably predict within a day when you will be in their store next and predict within 20% of how much you will spend based on what specials they are offering (well not you but your card - if you use it)

I agree that marketers don't pretend to love us so none of this is actually about you. Specials are there, not for the consumer, but for other corporate objectives and revenue streams.

Understand this that the supermarket makes about 2.5 - 3% profit from consumer sales. It used to be about 1% just 15 years ago. All the rest of their money comes from elsewhere. IN the last 15 years money from elsewhere has become more important and money from consumers less important to the supermarket's bottom line. And in the last 15 years supermarkets have increased their use of price adjustment strategies (offering a discounted or lower price). Its not a coincidence. Furthermore, its only part of the reason why they discount but i'm tired and its not worth explaining further.

        • You make it sound like it's a battle of wits between us and the marketeers. Maybe you like to think of it that way, but I don't look at it that way. Like cluster, I just shop smarter by modifying my habits. I don't consume more because they have specials. I just buy that item less often but more each time and stockpile. Speaking of which I wish there would be a Lindt dark chox special for $2, otherwise I'll have to buy more Moser Roth.

I also stopped using the Everyday Rewards card because I hardly ever exceed $30 and all I got for using it was more spam and requests to do surveys. Give my time for free, with no incentives? Cheapskates. :P

Obviously Coolies are flourishing due to advanced consumer persuasion techniques. But Aldi is also flourishing so there is room for improvement.

        • No its a battle of wits between them and the competitors. Like I've been repeating, its not about the consumer.

Whilst I see why you perceive that about my posts its the other posts gone before me that I'm reflecting on.

Ultimately, sites like these are making us all smarter shoppers and its great to belong to a community of like minded shoppers. And on that note i'd say that my discussion has gone too far away from the purpose of this site.

        • Well if you are going to do a dissertation on this topic, you should also note the tactic of making you buy more than one, e.g. 2 for $5, 4 for $3, etc. on the premise that people will consume more when they see the stuff lying around. I'm sure it works and contributes to the obesity problem.

      • I doubt if they are making any/much money from me. The only things I buy at Coolies are those not found in Aldi and only when they are on special. But I'm sure it works on the other shoppers who come for the loss leaders and pick up other stuff.

        • But you are still buying from them.

Sometimes pricing is NOT about making money from you. Supermarkets make more money from elsewhere than from consumers. Every time you don't buy at Aldi they are making money because of you, if not from you.

        • Maybe it's yours but it's not my intention to boycott them completely. If they sell a well-known soft drink or tomato sauce that is not available at Aldi then either I can go pay more at another chain or forgo it. I don't believe in buying food that I don't like the taste of for ideological reasons.

I also buy a lot of my fruits and vegies from markets rather than supermarkets.

        • I never shop at Aldi, I'm just illuminating on the topic. I shop at both the majors and IGA occasionally subject to the specials and I buy enough so that I can wait for specials resulting in about 90% of all my shopping bought on 'specials' pricing.

Been to coles this morning now off to woolies to pick up some of the above specials, thanks for posting this bargain

The special on energy drins is not "Monster", but "Mother".

    • Was about to post that. I wish it was Monster, has a way better taste - but I'll still get some Mother anyway for this price.

      • +1

I also prefer Monster, but 500ml is a lot to drink in 1 go…….end up bouncing off the walls ^_^

    • +1

      Ta. Corrected.

"Moro Extra Virgin Olive Oil 4 litres - $22.99 (save $27.00)"

    oils ain't oils. http://www.choice.com.au/reviews-and-tests/food-and-health/f…

    • +1

lol….Was waiting for someone to mention this along with - "Olive oil on sale again - what a surprise!"

    • even woolworths homebrand extra virgin olive oil is rated higher than morro.

    • Good value when on special but I would never buy it at full price. Good for cooking but I usually have some better quality stuff on hand for salad dressings etc.

  • Did something happen to greenseas tuna? They use to be on special every fortnight or so (counting Coles and woolies). Haven't seen them on special for ages. My stash has ran out :(

    • Same. I bought 30 for $30 when last on special. Looks like I'm back to Safcol until the special comes back! Lol

      • Mmm my stash usually has 60+ cans. 2 cans a day. Just shows how long they've not been on special for. Tuna is surprisingly expensive when not on sale haha. Need them proteins :)

        • Hopefully not 2 cans a day everyday…

        • Afraid of mercury poisoning max?

        • at least get the light tuna. but 2 cans per days seems excessive, see the bottom of http://www.cbc.ca/canada/manitoba/story/2007/02/19/tuna-test…

        • Dated back to 2007 but I do agree, there are always risks involved. Same thing can be said with salmonella poisoning from the 2+ eggs I eat daily.

        • well, not for me, for you

    • john west tuna tempters 95g are 6 for $6 at coles this week. i got some this afternoon. mmmmmm. the salmon tempters were 4 for $7 i think.

      • Thanks, forced me to have a look at the catalogue myself. Seems coles has greenseas 6 for $6 ending in 2 days. How did I miss it.. Cheers.

  • Woolworths is a total rip off now, i dont buy anything except specials from them and the rest from aldi.

the mother cans aren't even that cheap despite the face that they are the cheapest wholesale energy drink the supermarkets can buy. that should be more like their regular price.. V 500ml was $5 for 4 last week which is a better deal.

    • If you consider Woolworths a rip off, you should include Coles and IGA.

Just seems silly to bag one company when two other major companies are the same :)

I also shop and Aldi for everything but major specials.

      • Yep they are all much of a muchness, as I said above I wish somebody would just run decent prices all the time… Aldi is OK for certain things, but our local ones are always running out of stuff.

        • This year Coles has been catching up on market share because their specials have been much better than woolies

Eg the milo on special above is a very good special and normally a bargain unless you stocked up on milo at half price from Coles a few weeks ago

BTW, Coles has the exact sorbent tissue paper special right now

    • +1

We sadly don't have Aldi in SA. I don't quite understand why, as people are keen to bitch and whine about Coles/Woolworths on a regular basis and would love an alternative. Foodland is almost always more expensive for the staples I buy. Aldi could easily enter SA and shake up the marketplace.

      • I'm sure they will look into expansion in SA in the near future.
They have multiplied and established themselves quickly in Western Sydney over the past five years or so and are just starting to reach maturity.

    • you mean 4 for $5? I don't really like V taste anymore. With all the energy drink brand, Monster has the best taste :)

      • $5 for 4 and 4 for $5 is the exact same thing.

        • sorry, I got it wrong :) I thought you said 5 for $4.

        • No they're not.

  • Does anyone know the expiry dates on the Forreros?

    • 27/06/2011

      • +2

Just bought some. Nom nom nom. My expiry date is 14/05/11. These won't last till next week, let alone until the use-by-date.

  • Aldi isn't that great, you end up stuff you don't really need when I go there. Also I'd say you'd only save about 20% shopping at Aldi and the products aren't as good as the well known brands.

    • +2

I disagree. I do the majority of my shopping at aldi and only buy the stuff at safeway/iga which aldi dont sell or the others have on special. I have also found that most of aldi's products or as good a quality as the other supermarkets with a couple of exceptions.

    • Some of the food items simply don't taste as good as the better known brands.

    • The Aldi Colbert tomato sauce is no match for Heinz or Fountain, but some Aldi stuff actually tastes better. I actually like their choc biscuits better than Tim Tams, which I find too buttery. Their Moser Roth dark chox came close second to Lindt in Choice tests. Their Wheat Biscuits are actually sourced from Sanitarium also.

      • yeah man, Aldi is awesome and their pricing is transparent and permanent. None of these artificial weekly discount pricing tactics that other grocery chains use. I don't agree with this concept.

  • Auscreen sun lotion doesn't have ZINC in it but otherwise a good deal

  • Other deals that I like there include;

    Cadbury Choccie bars - $0.89
    Kirks 10 pack of cans - $3.99
    woolies muesli bars - $1.99 (6 pack)

  • Cant believe so many people like ALDI, except fruit and vege, 95% of their products have similar package lookings like those big brands…This is not making me feel good

    • they always seem to have cheap bananas & carrots. fortunately i have a choice of woolies, iga and aldi all in the same shopping centre.

  • Its actually 500 ml not 100 ml

    Radox Shower Gel 100ml - $2.99 (save $3.00)

  • Also noticed the huge Lifebuoy soap refills (500ml?) were also half price at $2.24 or thereabouts. Good if you already have the bottles or use a dispenser.

    • I think I noticed the bottles are half price too

      • yep. Standard pump bottles $1 each (200mls)
