Can We Get Universal Power Sockets in Australia

Folks - just a quick question to see if anyone knows if we can get a Universal Power Socket in Australia similar to this one:

or
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Suit-For-US-AU-EU-UK-Standar…

We have a few appliances from overseas and are in the process of building a new home. Rather than use universal power adapters, I was hoping to replace the existing power socket to a similar one above so that we don't have to depend on the adapters. Any information about this will be appreciated.

  • Not sure on the legality of these in Australia, but all our power boards in Kuala Lumpur are these universal type and the sockets are the UK style.

Super convenient as we'd usually use a power board anyway, we can plug in anything!

    It's great.

Then it would leave the onus on the home owner to make sure the device they plugged in was the right power/current for Australia…

    Not legal not approved

they dont meet australian standards, not legal

    • You mean they haven't been tested to see if they meet Australian standards?

      • It's the same thing.

A licensed electrician isn't going to install it. Insurance might have something to say if your house burns down.

Are you going to do hard time if you install one yourself? i doubt it.

        • Actually, they are not the same thing although the result is the same. It is not legal because it hasn't been tested not because they don't meet standards. When someone says 'don't meet Australian Standards' it implies that the item is of poor quality.

All the Chinese brand chargers sold on GB, etc. haven't been tested here either so not legal.

  • You can always wire up one yourself*

  • I tried to get a electrician to put a UK double gpo into the kitchen for some of the uk appliances I inherited. She didn't want to do it but was happy to put an australian 3pin plug on my UK 4 bang powerboard. The appliances all run fine on this board.

    • She? As in the Electrician is a she?

      • Is there a rule that an Electrician must be a male?

I had a female electrician here wiring up my new evaporative cooling in conjunction with the installer. While she was here I also got her to install a new safety switch fuse box. No problems whatsoever with her work. She also had a female apprentice working with her.

        • Have no problems with female electricians or plumbers. Just haven't seen one or had one come by yet. But if that's true then dunno why there are 'people' complaining about lack of women in that certain profession…

      • My electrician is a female, she has attended a few times now and she drives a dirty great big ute with a trailer and wears pink hivis.

  • No they aren't approved in Australia and for good reason too. One being we use 240v power.

If you have UK /EU plugs (i.e from a country with 240v) then ask an electrician to change the plugs to AU style plugs. Otherwise even if you converted the plug you'd need a step up transformer to be able to use the appliances.

I bought a magi mix in Paris and my electrician did this happily.

There are Aussie /USB power points from Bunnings https://www.bunnings.com.au/deta-x6-double-power-point-with-…

Would be handy for the kitchen/bedroom

HUH? australia uses 240v too? well between 220-240v
america is one of the 110v countries where you'd need a step up transformer, however a lot of electronics power supplies work on 110-240v.

Right so hence I said you can ask an electrician to change the plugs for UK/EU plugs. Other plugs may not be compatible with 240v.

I wouldn't rely on kitchen electronics being multi voltage.

  • Don't most hotels have these universal plugs built in? (most overseas ones do, not sure about Australian hotels) If so, then surely there are legal/approved ways of obtaining and installing some…

Fully Universal Wall Multi-Socket With Double 2.1 Amp USB Outlets

    • Thanks for the reply but doesn't look like this company exist / does this product.
However, appreciate your assistance in suggesting this link

  • Just a quick update folks; doesn't look like there are any companies that has wall plugs with universal socket built in (could be a good business idea for anyone keen :p)

Anyway, as for us - we will purchase several universal adaptors and keep them plugged into the standard double power socket.
    Most reasonable and cheapest option.
