Riesling Recommendation (Budget $100)

I am after a recommendation for a bottle of Riesling.

I'm looking at a budget of approximately $100. It will be for my mentor, who has helped me tremendously over the past year.

I'm not a wine person myself, so I'm not sure where to start. There seems to be an overwhelming number of choices out there.

Happy to purchase in store or order online.

Thank you in advance.

As a wine drinker I hate people buying expensive wines especially when they have no idea what's good and what's not on mans good wine s another's cats piss. Taste and smell is a personal thing.
I'd much rather 12 or even 48 bottles of something that's good and very drinkable.
A mate of mine who is a $60/bottle wine (profanity) has no problem drinking my wines when his single bottle has run dry.

  • My recommendation for a Riesling all year round, that is very well balanced is the four winds. They can vary from $22-28 in store.

Any riesling from the Langtons range in that price range will be pretty amazing, there's maybe a dozen choices around ~$30 a bottle, I reckon any one of these would be a might fine riesling drop myself.

As a dark horse Brown Brothers Patricia Late Harvest Noble Riesling 375mL this is a "desert" riesling, it's thick, sugary, and oh so yum with a snot block, aka vanilla slice, it's a little more expensive at ~$32 for a 375ml bottle but again oh so yum.

So, any 1, or 2, or 3 of the above would make your mentor pretty happy if they're a riesling person :)

This is one of the highest ranked (for 2017 vintage) riesling on the Halliday website. Not $100 but still in the fancy present range of pricing https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_900852/grosset-poli…

Does your mentor drink Semillon? Because this is a pretty prestigious/famous australian wine that wins a trophy at pretty much any wine show its put into https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_415528/tyrrell-s-va…

Likely whatever vintage of the Vat 1 you can get will have some stupid amount of medals across the bottle too.

If you do purchase someone a Riesling, its important to know whether they like dry or sweet riesling as the two versions are quite different. ie. I hate the sweet stuff but love the dry stuff.

I love a Pikes Reisling - or if you can get it D'arenberg Dry Dam - Not $100…and delicious

I love that you don't need to spend anything like $100 to get a cracking Australian Riesling. I love some of the suggestions above and would happily also recommend the Frankland Estate Isolation Ridge Riesling (available for under $40):

    • Exactly what I was going to post!

  • You would be better off giving a $100 gift card for Dirty Dan's & then your mentor can choose to his own preferences>
    Food for thought.

Difficult to go past either of the big boys from Henty in South West Victoria. Seppelt Drumborg or Crawford River. About 40 a pop and consistently awesome.
