Audioengine D1 vs FiiO E10k

Hey everyone!

I'm currently looking for an amp+dac and have nailed it down to two specific ones. The Audioengine D1 and the FiiO E10k are quite different in price but on paper do the same job (from what I understand).

Sound quality is very subjective to people so I was hoping someone with personal experience with any of the two devices could comment on their usage. I'm leaning towards the Audioengine only because I have a $50 voucher to spend at JB but considering I'm quite new to this I'm asking around first!

Thanks :)

I bought the FiiO E10k. I'm not an audiophile and to be honest I can't tell the difference between it and my Mobo's built in sound solution.

      source: flac or youtube ?

output: what speakers ? headphones ?

      • I have a Q1 and its miles better than any laptop i've any laptop i've ever used which is to be expected.

      • any source really. FLAC, MP3, streaming etc. I've only got Superlux 681EVO headphones though - definitely nothing special

    • Haha, same here. i think i bought into the hype reading peoples opinions online. the fiio e10k does nothing for the hd598, m50x or fidelio x2. cant say much for more expensive headphones but in my opinion waste of money if you have these headphones. maybe op has something more powerful

      • Motherboard audio has significantly improved in the last few years - manufacturers can no longer get away with terrible quality audio anymore, which is a real win for consumers. That being said, while you may not need a powerful amp to drive any of those cans, you should be able to notice a difference in sound quality and accuracy if you are using a good dac. The fiio is good, but not great - something like a dragonfly black dac would probably be a better investment.

  • The audioengine gets very respectable reviews from most people, but it is an entry level DAC. You'll still definitely notice a BIG improvement. You could also save a lot more money buying one used, from someone who is upgrading. That being said, by going for a strict headphone amp/dac combo-in-one you're going to be locking yourself into a smaller range of devices, as well as getting slightly poorer bang for buck, as well as making it more expensive if/when you do decide to upgrade.

    • I found this post but some are quite hard to buy in Australia (or cost quite a lot). What would you recommend? Thanks!

      • The dragonfly black dac might be a good option, which headphones do you currently have? It’s a much newer model than the D1. The D1 was the best option when it came out, but that was quite a while ago.

        • I'm on the market for new headphones but I'll start with the dac/amp since there's so much less choice over cans. The dragonfly black is perfect for my requirements. Thanks!

  • I have the chord mojo and let me tell you the difference is great…

  • Have you considered the ODAC/O2? Some people also like ths Schitt Magni/Modi combo for around $200 USD.

    • $200 USD is a little over my budget, I don't want to spend anymore than $200 AUD but if I do find it, I definitely will be interested :)

  • I've got a D1 im willing to part with and I'm Sydney based as well ;)

    • How much you looking for?

      • $100

        • I'm interested. Let me know in a pm some details.

Thanks for the offer but I'm probably going to settle on the dragonfly!

      • No worries! It actually reminded me to hook it up again last night so i may keep it lol
