Help Me Solve This Furniture Planning Issue

Hi All

I am not sure if ozbargain is the place to post this but let me try it anyways . I am moving into an apartment where the entry door opens straight into the living room . Trying to figure out how to best organise the furniture .

Few things
-it will be good if i can create an illusion of entry way
-have normal furniture like 3 seater couch , 2 seater couch , chair , tv unit , dinning table (4) .
-Both balconies are covered

  • you could maybe buy a room divider (like a bifold door that stands free) to put directly in front of the front door, which directs the traffic to the left upon entering…???
    similar to this https://vastinterior.com.au/catalogsearch/result/?q=room%20d…

    • thanks Barbella i always wondered about how flimsy these room divider will be ? if i put them at the entry will they like fly away while opening and closing main door

  • It would be wise to also know where the power, tv and telephones points are on the plan. Some designers would place them how they would furnish a room however some dont really think and place them where its logical but may not be practical.

If you want extension leads and visable wiring is another thing. Or you just have to make do with however the builders has put them

    • Thanks for commenting Archi . Its and established unit so i have to make do with whats already there

I think Archi's point is to look at where the points are already, they may have been put there on purpose as per the vision of the original designer, so gives you a hint on how it should be laid out.

  • Ikea app is good for 3D visualisation.

    • Thanks na8an i will try it

to create a pseudo entryway I reckon maybe some drawers or a shoe shelf around the doorway in an L shape will work best.

Then behind the shoe shelves add a good looking room divider and some indoor plants on top of the shelves. Here's a pic of the idea https://imgur.com/a/M3o4o would be interesting to flip the L as well see what is better in person.

Hard to judge the scale unfortunately so I've got no clue how much space you have or if this would end up being too restrictive. My worry is that it will take too much space in the living room and creates a redundant space behind the L to the right side

here's another idea https://imgur.com/a/3JODj for if you want a more open feeling space. (this second one should have low down shoe shelving with taller plants)

    • I really like the first option sock but yes i have the same doubts as you pointed out . I might have to measure things and see how it fits .
      Thanks some really brilliant ideas

I've put a lot of thought into this and I've come up with the following solution which I think will suit your needs perfectly

    https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/37385/56392/suggested_…

  • I've used an app called "Planner 5d" in the past to arrange my room. Although finding the right furniture on there is hard, just find the closet looking one, but then change the dimensions to be the same as yours, this will allow you to move things around easily to give you a better visual idea.

I've had a look at your plan and what I might do is to put the tv on the west wall, couch in front of the front door facing the tv/west wall. dinning table between the couch and balcony.
    Reasons for this.
Tv on the west all means that it can be seen from couch, dinning table, balcony and from the kitchen when by the sink.
Having the couch in front of the door forces people to naturally head east(left)/towards the balcony. and if you come home super tired, you can just fall into the couch ;)
This creates a natural flow for when people come in, they will head to the left, follow the wall to the balcony and follow that wall to access the rest of the apartment.

    • Thanks cityend some very good points there .

Why didn't you choose an apartment that had an entry way instead of trying to create the illusion of one that clearly doesn't exist?

    • Because sometimes in life you dont get what you want and you have to make do with you get . You will understand this as you mature enough.

      • Ha OK. Just an honest question, relax your sacks!
