I heard there is a political unrest over there. I don’t think I would recommend this place for the time being.

    • +2

thanks for sharing, probably head to PyeongChang for Olympics instead haha

    • +5

Probably not an issue if you don't stay at the capital. Most people going there stay in a far-off Island of theirs, not the capital city / Island.

        • +7

Actually it’s isn’t. The airport isn’t in the capital. It’s on Hulhumale

        • +11

          Buuuurrrnnnnn

        • +1

Igacb08 - your comment is the ignorant one.

What Ubercool said - Airport is not on Male Island.

Is like saying you won't go to Melbourne because of a protest outside Canberra parliament. Now you can remove your foot from your mouth. Or your head out from elsewhere. Lol

        • Your comment is the ignorant one. The airport is on its own island away from Maldives capital.

        • Destroyed

        • @dangerdanger:

Except Male is 3.4km from the Airport and Melbourne is 683km from Canberra by road.

        • @Salty Pretzel:

          3.4km away lol

        • +1

          @rye:

          Savage.

        • @rye:

so i'm heading to maldives in sept for the honeymoon so this isn't good news to me lol but lookinga the main airport it is a seperate island from male and from the airport we would get a boat transfer straight to the resort we have booked

        • @prankster: I wouldn't be overly concerned if I was in your position, we went on our honeymoon 2 years ago and that was the same warning/advice. Just avoid the main island, direct transfer.

    Travel warning. Beware.

    • Doesn't seem like there is any major warnings out about it via the gov website though:
      http://smartraveller.gov.au/Countries/asia/south/Pages/maldi…

      • +2

Really? Flights are in to Male.

        The Smart Traveller website says:

Malé Island, exercise a high degree of caution Pay close attention to your personal security at all times and monitor the media about possible new safety or security risks.

        Edit

        And it continues to say:

On 5 February 2018, Maldives government declared a State of Emergency. Avoid protests and large public gatherings as they have the potential to turn violent. Monitor local media and follow instructions issued by local authorities. See Safety and security.
Exercise a high degree of caution on Malé Island due to the possibility of civil unrest. Pay close attention to your personal security at all times.
Terrorist attacks are possible, including against Maldivian institutions and tourist locations frequented by Westerners. See Safety and security.
Protests and demonstrations have been frequent in Malé since February 2015. Demonstrations can lead to violence and arrests. Avoid all demonstrations, protests, and large public gatherings. See Safety and security.
Drug-related crime occurs in Malé. Gang-related violence, including knife crime, has increased in populated areas, including Malé. See Safety and security.

This website warns about every country, try doing searches for any commonly visited places. It almost reads like an insurance policy and disclaimer.

        • +2

Literally flew back from there on the 3rd. You dnt see anything if u go straight to the airport.

        • +1

          @cumova:

So are you covered by your insurance if an incident does happen, given that DFAT have issued warnings?

  • +7

Given that it's an expensive destination the savings from using a budget airline are insignificant. Not to mention the political ruckus.

    • +5

You save where you can. These airfare savings are significant for me.

    • +1

I agree. If I was paying $7000 for a week, another $500 for full fare airline wouldn’t bother me

      • +1

$7000 for a week is pretty pricey.

        • I just booked 4 nights for $7100. Over water villa with private pool and beach. Won't be flying there from Aus otherwise it's a good price. Return from Shanghai is 1300 per person with Singapore Airlines. Can't wait.

      • If you're paying $7000/week I've got a bridge to sell you.

      • +1

The Maldives looks overrated compared to other places anyway, but plenty of people would like to go to places like that despite not having so much money that $500 means nothing to them.

Especially as you don't need to spend $7000 - there are much cheaper options and people can also use hotel points etc they've been saving up.

        • +2

But if you don't go to the Maldives, then you can't take all those cool pictures of your legs on the beach and post it on Instagram

  • +2

Political ruckus there. Even $100 I will not buy.

    • What about $10, Ning?

      • When Ning says no, Ning means no.

  • +1

    Wow that's cheap.

  • +5

Most ironic budget flight route ever?

  • Check accommodation and travel costs there too.. apparently it is stupid expensive to stay anywhere or get anywhere

    • Nope. The Ultra luxury resorts cost a fortune. Nice resorts can be found for a much more reasonable price.

      • +1

        Thankyou messiah of Maldives knowledge

        • Haha you're welcome (my immense knowledge unfortunately only comes from a 30 minute research session when deciding if it's a place I want to go to!).

        • @callum9999:
Any tips haha I cant much good value ones at all!

        • +1

@bansharkfin: I remember seeing quite a few really nice ones for $1k a week, then thought nah and went backpacking through South America for a month instead! I'll have a look later for you though.

        • @callum9999: haha awesome! thanks man :)

    • that reminds me of something

FYI AirAsia operates daily flights between KUL and MLE with Airbus A320s, but since last month they have added three A330 services a week. Ideally you want to book an itinerary flying the A330 for the extra 3 inch seat pitch. The A320 flights have airline code AK, A330 flights have airline code D7 (AirAsia X).

    • +5

      You are an AirAsia maestro.

  • like everyone else said…why? maldives is a honeymoon destination for many. there are cheaper beautiful islands to stay at, like thailand's islands

  • Political unrest? You mean the PM lost support of his party and was replaced by his deputy? Or was there a leadership spill and replacement-PM lost her job? Sounds familiar heh

  • +1

SYD - MLE is 20% cheaper on the AirAsia app until Feb 11 - only $450pp!

  • the Ads photo looks so good!

  • It's raining season June July so I'd be more upset of it pissin down the whole week I'm there than anything else

I don't see the bargain here, more like false economy. To use this bargain, you need to spend around 10 days there. Maldives is not a place that you can spend that many days. Perhaps few days, not 10 days with very expensive accommodation.

    https://www.quora.com/How-many-days-are-sufficient-to-visit-…

Unless you really into water activities.
