    Need to rename website xiaomibargain

  • Anyone know if I can link 2 gateway together?

    • I don't think you can with the Mi Home app but I've achieved something similar using Home Assistant. I think you can only link the various zigbee sensors up to one gateway but I wanted one door sensor to activate multiple gateways. My Home Assistant setup receives the door event via one gateway and sends actions to multiple gateways.

Yes you can. Based on iPhone app.
      - Click on one of the gateways
      - Select 'Auto' tab
      - Click on 'Alert'
      - Click on 'More Settings'
      - Click on 'Linkage alarm'
      - Select 2 or more gateways to link them together and click 'OK'

This app could use better UX.

      • You sir are a scholar and a gentleman.
Protip: don't name all your gateways Gateway, the list of gateways gets very confusing then.

        • I'm flattered by your comment sir. Have a good day.

I cant tell if the gateway is the updated version or the old version? any ideas?

Not trying to hate on OP, but the gateway is one of the more useless Xiaomi home devices out there.

The only reason you "need" this is if you've got zigbee xiaomi home devices like the door sensors.

the radio can be hacked to play non chinese radio, but the speaker is kind of crappy. (this is a more international list of streams, not diy though)

The only thing mine gets used for is playing the doorbell noise when the door opens, or at night the light turns on when the movement sensor is triggered.

As usual the xiaomi home app is useless. You cant even trigger it to turn a certain colour light on an event, just on or off (whatever the previous colour was)

    • +1

How can the radio be hacked to play non chinese ,can you advise?

      • It is set in the application, so I guess you need to hack the Mi Home app.

      • f… my internet. 3rd time lucky

        http://ximiraga.ru/

It adds a list of streams, about 90% are russian. The rest are hardcore trance. The only 2 western i've seen are bbc1 and bbc4.

The speaker is utter garbage. save yourself the effort and buy the cheap xiaomi bluetooth speaker for a few dollars, it's about 3 times better. The big xiaomi bluetooth square speaker is better, but about 4 times the price.

      • It's a little hacky, but this apparently works: http://ximiraga.ru/

I think the worst thing about the gateway is that it's just a PITA to mount - either it goes straight into a wall outlet, obscuring the adjacent socket with its size, or it has to be remote mounted with a 240vac extension cord. It either case, it's difficult to put it exactly where you want it without hassles.

Tying it into home assistant makes it more useful than the Mi Home app. At least then you can use the light/PIR component as a sensor for tasks outside of the MI ecosystem.

All that aside, if you're ordering it from LITB you may never get it and if it goes missing in transit you'll never get customer service to help you. Source: still waiting for a dashcam from last November, and my support tickets are repeatedly rebuffed or closed for no reason.

      • I've got mine on a power board (which is stuck on the desk with double sided tape). I 100% agree, it's huge and takes up at least the 1 more socket.

I think the idea was good in theory, but with these things you want them in the centre of the room. where powerboards are generally hidden away near the skirting boards.

I've started home assistant, but it got put to the side. Still, the home app needs significant improvement, i'm not referring to amazing redesigning here, just more options. when the front door sensor is triggered, the light goes blue, when the back door is triggered it goes red etc etc. A better delay for re-triggers etc.

        • Yeah I found the Mi Home app a little restrictive so I've moved as much automation as I could to hass. However the app does things hass can't, like trigger the xiaomi xiaofang security cameras to record when a sensor is activated, which suits me more than the motion detector.

It'd be nice if the gateway light could fade the brightness, I simulated it in hass but the smallest time delay is 1 second which is useless for a smooth brightness ramp.

I use tiny power plug converters like these to space them off the wall, it works great.

      • Yeah hear a lot about Light in the box (LITB) and their dodgy practices almost as much as Kogan!

Waiting on Kogan to "Check" their parts list for an appliance that came without a crucial piece :L

Not a happy chappy, will do my best to screw them around if they try yanking my chain again.

    • +1

Not only is it great as a novelty doorbell, it's fantastic when used as part of a home automation platform like Home Assistant. My setup tells the xiaofang camera to record when a door is opened, monitors temperature of home/car/server closet, sends text to speech to the chromecast for fun and monitors power socket load to tell me when appliances are finished.

      • +1

it's not exactly an out of the box solution though.

        • buy gateway
        • link gateway to account
        • get xiaomi gateway api
        • buy raspberry pi
        • install custom image
        • ssh into pi
        • enter api code
        • configure using commandline.

Im going to spend more time on it this weekend, but it is time consuming trying to circumnavigate something that should have been designed properly in the first place

        • +1

No it not an out of the box solution. But Xiaomi didnt design it to work with home assistant. As for the other stuff, welcome to Linux!

        • +3

          @jackwoz:

lol, i dont think xiaomi designed it to work with xiaomi!

          :P

I have home assistant as well, but i never thought about power socket usage for when appliances finish. Thanks!

        • +2

Check out Phil Hawthorne's blog for how to set up for a washing machine and dishwasher.

        • @brazen00: That is freaking amazing, thanks for that link.
Now I have to get more door sensors for all the appliance doors… hey rep got any codes?

        • +1

It's a handy function, but it's not exactly instantaneous. 2 reasons:

          1) things like dishwashers and washing machines have high and low phases in their cycles so you might think it's finished when it's just the washing machine pausing to soak or whatever

          2) there is a decent time delay between current being detected at the smart switch and that information being made available at Home Assistant. This is, i think, due to the fact the data is polled, not published meaning that there is a variable 0-2 minute delay between the appliance starting/stopping and your automation being triggered. Fine for reminding you that the dishwasher needs unstacking, but not for say triggering a light when you turn on your kettle.

  • I'm getting a "502 Bad Gateway" error when I click the Proceed to PayPal button in the checkout process.
    Nevermind, it's all good now.

  • Has anyone put the door sensor inside their hardwired doorbell chime unit, so that you get notifications when the doorbell rings? I didn't have success, but I think it wasn't close enough to the electromagnet.

    • +1

It's pretty sensitive tbh, it wouldnt suprise me. I put a magnet near it (not a neodynium) and it triggered it.

Also, put the sensor on it's side, with the "alignment mark" facing the electromagnet.

    • Couldn't you get rid of the existing doorbell button entirely and just use a Xiaomi Button to ring the gateway bell?

      • I prefer retrofitting it for my folks. Best of both worlds. Could also put a gateway at the far end of the house and make that ring.

  • Anyone got any links to useful forums/how tos for this? I got the kit on a previous deal but the button wasn't turning the light on like I'd set in the mi home app. So I tried deleting the scene but it said it couldn't synch. So I reset the button using the pin, but then couldn't get it to re-add to the gateway. So I removed the gateway from the app to reset it and now I can't re-add it to the app…. Sigh

    • Did you hold down the button on the gateway until it starts talking?

      • Yep. But it's not showing up when I "add new device" on the mi home app. Light is yellow flashing in bursts of three

Hmm. Switched my profile to mainland China and it discovered it. Despite it discovering it before when I was on Singapore. Odd.

        • +1

@salem: Yeah most of this stuff doesn't work here unless it's set to mainland China.

        • @korda: yeah just weird that it paired the first time while set to Singapore. And now I'll have to move my air purifier and bedside lamp over from my Singapore profile to the China one :(
