Favourite/Better Quality Grocery Items From Aldi That You Can't Get at Colesworth

I'm lucky enough to shop in a complex that has both Coles and Aldi. I do most of my shopping at Coles because I'm not familiar with the Grocery Products at Aldi & don't want to be returning things I don't like however I do buy certain things from Aldi that Coles do not stock. My favourite is the seasoned roast chicken pieces that I just throw on the BBQ and dinners sorted, my second is Dr oekters (Papa Giuseppes) Panini's from the freezer section which I eat too much of. Also my cat is a big fan of the Dine range however it is quite pricey compared to Whiskas.

What's your favourite items from Aldi ?

    Eton biscuits. Cheaper too!

  • Frozen salmon parcels (wrapped in puff pastry).
And the lobster tails whenever on special.

Hommus and guacamole dip - just awesome !
    Blueberry Yogurt !

    • Is that a combined hommus and guacamole dip? Or the separate single dips?

filled pasta (truffle and porcini mushrooms)

    • This! I have them every week.

Also their truffle butter, truffle salami - great tasting products.

I thoroughly enjoy their vegetable gyozas - great taste, steams and fries well.

My partner prefers the taste of the Yellowfin tuna in oil cans over those in Coles and Woolies.

Aldi's (organic) Vanilla Greek yoghurt is the best I've ever tasted.

EDIT: Aldi's tinned tuna is much nicer than homebrand Coles/Woolworths too (they're gross), and the Yellowfin is cheaper than both. Can be matched by sales though.

Woolies/Coles nearly always have the small individual cans of tuna on sale for $1 each

Brioche. Can’t leave Aldi without it.

    • So true.. Love em..

  • The problem I find with Aldi is you find a great product only for it to be withdrawn or changed.

    Examples:
They used to do waxed cheeses (I was very fond of the smoked one) that seemed to be a direct rebrand of a premium brand like South Cape. Gone now.
Their cheap wafer biscuits were delicious, they disappeared for many months and the replacement is inferior.
The green thai curry with rice ready meal, ain't what it used to be.

Also what kind of supermarket stocks pizza bases, pizza cheese, pizza pepperoni, and other pizza toppings, but doesn't stock pizza sauce??? Curse you Aldi!

    • Their Vita Wheat biscuit equivalent used to be great once, now they are just minced cardboard in the shape of a cracker biscuit. Bloody awful.

They reformulated their crumpets a year or so ago - and put the price up. Now you wouldn't feed them to your dog. Bloody awful. There is a reason why Golden Crumpets are twice the price. Fortunately they are often on special at Coles and Woolies so I stock up, and freeze them.

Their margarine is full of palm oil and tastes foul. Not content with killing orangutans, they want to kill us as well.

Quite a few other things that I liked have just vanished from the store and never returned, even reformulated and in new packaging.

Unfortunately, this is Aldi. To keep the prices low, they must regularly reformulate products with cheaper ingredients, and find cheaper manufacturers to produce them.

I am happy buying basics like flour, sugar, milk, cheese, bleach, dishwasher powder etc there. But I have to go to the others for my Dilmah tea, Meadowlea Marg, Lea & Perrins Worcester sauce, Kikkoman Soy sauce etc, etc. There are some products where you need the real thing, not a half baked imitation.

For pizza sauce you only need a tomato can or a bottle of passata. The oven will cook it no need to do it previously

    • Aldi does pizza sauce too now!

  • I love the mountain bars, aldi toblerones. I havent lived in australia for almost 3 years, and i always ask for the peppermint mountain bars when a box gets sent.

The Westacre tasty cheese blocks are excellent at a good price. I have tried the cheaper option and not that good. Also the Remano fettuccine are great and the eggs fresher than the two giants

    • Will have to try westacre block. I was not impressed with the single slices tasty westacre and will stick with coles brand

    • The Westacre $7/500g extra tasty is pretty good, but Coles used to have one for the same price that was much, much better, with the little salty crystals that are a sign of a really good mature cheddar. But they discontinued it a year or so ago, was very disappointed.

      • Exactly I was used to buy that, and even the Woolies homebrand was good, now both are mediocre. Every few years they change supplier and probably that happens with Aldi too

  • Recently, ran out of coffee beans, no good sale running at ColesWorth, thought I will check out the Aldi coffee beans as I remembered some OzBers had said they are not bad at all. Only $11.49 for 1kg. Got to say, very good value for money, and decent quality.

Also, got the Precious Earth Chardonnay for $2.70, even boasts a Bronze medal. Chatted with the checkout person, who suggested if it is not too good, can always use in cooking. Found it OK for casual drinking (not expecting too much, of course). Will be buying more! :-)

Although can get equivalent at Colesworth, but not at these prices.

  • hot chocolate sachets.. works out to about 40c per drink.. the white ones are a bit sus tho.. but i do buy them sometimes.

  • Oh So Natural Wholefoods Organic Cacao Powder

    Organic Tofu

  • I used to shop at Aldi for their Canola Margarine they have changed it for Vegetable oil which contains the Palm oils and do not know what other oils, they also use a new tub which contains the same colors, pretty sneaky hey, most of the time their Bananas are slightly cheaper, their 85c bread is pretty good,I am a single person and cannot find enough savings through Aldi to fully shop there,Coles and Woolies both have specials that are on special all week whereas Aldi specials run from Saturday to Tuesday then return to normal prices on Wednesday when the next lot of specials begin on the Wednesday to Friday,if you shop for high sugar/fats items you shop at Aldi as you can save quite a bit, deli items at Coles and Woolies leave Aldi running a very distant last,I find Coles is a bit better than Woolies and Aldi for the odd bits when they are on special only

  • Choceur is on par with Cadbury chocolates; El Tora Jalapeno Sauce better than many from ColesWorth; Organic Honey and Maple Syrup is great quality and value.

  • johninmelb, thank you,I finally found someone with some knowledge,I too am margarine user and always purchased it from Aldi when it was known as Canola margarine and was made with Canola oil,you may note that Aldi has changed over to Vegetable oil and they still use the exact colors and color scheme as the Canola margarine used,a note is that WoolWorths have also did away with the $1.59 Canola Marg and replaced it with Vegetable oil but they did use a different color into a white tub,I now go to Coles to get my cheaper than others Canola margarine and it is good as Canola should be in taste and using the more healthier oils,I also use the Rice Bran Cereal oil and the pure Sunflower oil for baking and frying, the Rice Bran oil also have the same Plant Sterols as the really expensive cholesterol lowering margarines on the market,

    • Is vegetable oil inferior to canola oil? I found canola oil has quite a string taste, at least when we used it in a cake recipe.

      • If canola had a taste at all it was probably spoiled or rancid

        • Hmmmm, that's quite possible, I've been buying the large 4l bottled and they had been on special, have two more of them too! :-(

        • @kiitos:
Canola home brand at Woolies 2 lt $4.40, cheaper than the 4lt branded on special

    • So Aldi has rice bran oil, good to know. Do they have rice bran oil in an aerosol too?

It like their Butterfully butter tubs, do they olive oil margarine spread?

      Thanks.

  • try the Rice Bran Oil it contains the Plant Sterols the same as in the margarine that you pay $6-$7 plus for a 500gram tub claimed to be cholesterol reducing, another is the Sunflower oil which are supposed to be one of the the best and of course there is the Extra Virgin Olive Oil which is much dearer, some reports that there is a difference between Italian and Spanish olive oils I had used both before changing to the Rice Bran or the Sunflower oils,if you see the Olive LIGHT Oil it means it is LIGHT in color and taste nothing else,my cholesterol used to be 8-11 since using the Rice Bran and Sunflower since 2007 after 3 heart attacks in 4 months in that year I was also put on a drug named Crestor and ever since I was released from the Cardiac Intensive Care after my third attack my total cholesterol has not exceeded 3.8,and I still like my fresh home cooked chips, eggs and bacon,I am now 75yrs.yes I am a bit of a Tubby but at at least I am enjoying life.

    • I used rice bran cos I thought it was healthier than canola for frying.
So you are saying it's good for lowering cholesterol when deep frying some fish or pan frying a chicken schnitzel?

  • International Cuisine Frozen Pizzas and Pizza squares. $3.50, better than anything else at Woolies in that price range.

There bags of dim sims pretty good… maybe not as good as Golden Wok but about ⅓ the price
