Please Help with CHEAP Eats in Brisbane and Gold Coast !

Hi all,

This sounds pathetic, but any help with unbelievable cheap restaurants and food joints in Brisbane and Gold Coast would be muchly appreciated.

Unfortunately I have a gf who is upset because I always eat in, and when I do eat out, it's usually a pizza between the two of us (I bring my own bottled water…how sad.. haha), or a Hungry Jacks $5 stunner meal each.

Please help with any non fast food places which preferably have meals for under $10.

Kind regards,
cheapskateasian

Market Square at Sunnybank has way too many restaurants all with filling and tasty meals around the $10 range. Even less if you have a really great grasp of what is both delicious and cheap in the various Asian cuisine.

PROTIP: Do not park near any trees, the birds all have diarrhea. And there are 50 million of them. It may be easier to park at Dan Murphy's as parking spots are incredibly finite and you will otherwise deal with chain smoking Taiwanese soccer mums parking like absolute arse.

Indian Diner on the Vulture & Boundary St intersection in West End has brilliant meals (every single one of them involves curry) under $10. Do not take women there if you want to impress them with decor and ambience. The Lebanese place up the road also has decent munchies for a dollar or two each but $10 is not filling if you are a growing boy.

On the Gold Coast, try out Yamasakura. Decent Sushi + Ramen meals for less than $10. It is on Surfers Paradise Blvd, not far from Cavill. It's opposite Chevron Rennaisance, where the Superduck bus stops. If you are willing to splash $50 out this is also a good restaurant to do that in, the owners seem to care more about food quality than profit. There is a ramen place underneath it that is the best ramen I've tasted outside of Japan.

The only other under $10 option in this city is cheap steak night at random pub. Not a big fan of that. If you really must, the funnest place would be The Fox on certain days when they have absurdly cheap steak and ribs. See their website for further details.

You have a good point. This guys gf is gonna drop him like a bag of shit VERY SOON! I mean WTF bringing his own bottle water to a 5 dollar dinner! JESUS! This is ozbargain, not BIGGESTTIGHTASS,COM!

    • Things change a lot with age and income. When I was starting uni, I hesitated at buying a $15 paint brush at an art store. Now, I have income and that paint brush doesn't seem that much any more. Perspective changes with circumstance.

Question is whether your partner can settle for less when you can't afford it, isn't it?

When I was 19 there was this moment in life where I received no youth allowance, no support from parents, and had no job nor any will to (yet again) get an entry-level minimum wage job. The money I had saved up for a car was instead rapidly disappearing to cover my subsistence costs.

This was also when I had a girlfriend who truly did not care. We rode bikes, we jammed, we walked in the park, we ate on a budget. At the time, she didn't care at all that I had no money. I now make an extremely comfortable level of income and am nowhere near as happy as I was when I was a broke little student that was madly in love. Maybe cheapskateasian has something special here, something money can never buy. Which is good, cos man is he a bloody tightarse or what.

If you're reading this, cheapskateasian, take your girl somewhere nice. I don't mean ARIA. I don't necessarily mean the places I listed above either. Try Becofino at Teneriffe, or Verve in the city. Both are Italian places with mains for under $20 yet are places she can get dressed up for.

With what money? Some people get a job. Others slang stuff off on ebay and gumtree for fun and profit. I've already made enough assumptions about you so I won't go any further on what you could and would do, but good god man at the very least buy her a cupcake, she deserves it.

      • here here, with you sir, i relate! reflective sighs

      • so you guys still together?

        • Nope. She broke up with me when we were 21 and I'd just started an internship in HK for 2 months. That was apparently 2 months too long (we lived together for 2 years).

Her reasons? At her age, she wanted to have other experiences, presumably with other boys. See the world, venture out on her own in search of adventure, etc. Understandable I guess, but I was in love and quite upset at the universe.

Who can really know what goes on in the minds of women? Certainly not other women, let alone us plebs.

  • Jade Buddha on Eagle Street has a decent $10 steaks every sunday 2 to 5 pm.

  • registered on 30 Nov 2010, 1st post with strange id? you are obviously not an Asian -)

  • My advice, learn how to cook…even some basic but tasty recipes she likes! Might not help save too much on a trip (unless you stay in a self-contained unit), but on a daily basis if you put in the effort to cook her something as nice as you'd get at a restaurant or cafe (not too hard based on some of the swill I've sent back at various eateries), top it off with a nice but moderately priced bottle of vino & she'll be yours forever for a very modest fee!

That said, I've had girlfriends with champagne tastes on a beer budget, I used to pull them up real quick! If they want something better than you can financially provide at any given time, let them pony up a few bucks towards the expense…that sorts the wheat from the chaff pronto! If they're fair dinkum about you, they won't care whether they eat $10 pub steak or $100 Wagyu filet mignon; if that's an issue, then you're honestly better off without them…always plenty more fish in the sea! ;)

  • Sing's Asian Kitchen in Rosalie - you can get a main meal with boiled rice for $10.90 - like asian chicken stir fry plus the jasmine rice. pretty good price for pretty good food.

  • esq, leilv, SewBalls, and dammit - thanks for your replies! muchly appreciated :)

I'm a regular patron of Sunnybank. Usually visit the pho joint next to the toilets. My concern at Asian restaurants is my gf likes to order several dishes… which really suck! haha and yes, 100% agree with birds and their diarrhroea! I've made the mistake once and never again! lol

And yes, indeed I am now a broke uni student, so I'm doing the best I can to keep her happy. This current gf is cool, but I feel guilty because there are many things I cannot do for her and I cannot fulfill my role as a good bf because of finances. And yes, I'm 100% Asian…. but I don't see why my ethnicity matters to this thread. Plus I really can't see why I would claim to be Asian if in fact I wasn't…

    • lol that one with the cow illuminated sign, just make sure she doesn't see the "morning glory"(forgot the name) shop, the toys/accessories in there are expensive
no worries, im 100% asian too

      • actually I took her to eat pho there once and she walked past the store and wanted the biggest Domo Kun in the window which was $120 >.<

        LOL!

  • Maybe what you need is a new girlfriend, not cheap places to eat. You do know this is not going to get better don't you?

    • A new rich girlfriend? :) Might be even harder than to find $10 non-fast-food places.

ahh i know the feeling of maintenance girlfriends. :( all i want is one with (greater than) 30wpm typing skills + uses pc or ubuntu.

    lol

wanted the biggest Domo Kun in the window which was $120

$120!!!!!!!!! thats like 2TB's worth of hard disks!
    ive made my choice…. bahahahaha

nd yes, I’m 100% Asian…. but I don’t see why my ethnicity matters to this thread.

I think it might have been because of your username :)

  • Non fast food meal under $10 is a tall order for Gold Coast! This probably does not fit your ($10) bill but I found it to be amazing value for such delicious food:

Cha Cha Japanese restaurant on Broadbeach.

  • the lebanese place on vulture street just up from the corner of boundary road(st?) -yum.

the vegetarian place (gobels?) 2 doors down and from that "asian" mall across myer centre.

    • yeah govindas -thanks discountdeals

  • Govinda's is good, they are at James St Burleigh and in Stones Corner somewhere, the food is yum cheap as and you can make out like you are some sort of vegan, veggo, cruisy hippy guy and she'l love you for it.
