Advice and Help for Travel from Sydney to Vancouver for Xmas!

I’m an oringal Canadian now Australian - I’m 34 and haven’t been home for Christmas in over 14 years. All my family is there - I’m determined I’m going to this year. Making it worth my while and also attempting to avoid the ‘xmas Overcharge’ for flights - I have taken 6 weeks annual leave. Flying me and my 5 yr old son. Been looking at air canada direct flights for $1,679 leaving December 10th, coming back jan 6th. I’m flexible with dates - I have 4 or 5 weeks to spend there - I just need to arrive at least a couple days before Xmas and that’s all I care about. Ideally 4 weeks or close to total. I’ve been hunting skyscanner - tried ALL the combinations for the best deal. At one stage there was an air China flight for $900 per person - it was annoying being 12 hr flight, 11 hr layover, then another 11 hr flight - but would have saved $2000… so I was open to it and my son loves flying - but 4 hours later it was gone … anyone know where I should be hunting for these flights? Should I book something now at a decent price? Pretty sure dec and jan never go on sale? Thanks for the advice people!!!

    try fly365.com.au, iwantthatflight.com.au.

the flights you can book sometimes change by the hour, try checking in the morning before 10am.

  • Search on momondo. I just put in your dates and China Eastern is $1205, Korean with better connections $1250

  • How much does your son love flying though ? Unless you get a hotel for the layover , you’ll be dealing with a tired 5 yo for 11 hours and then you’ll both have another 11 hour flight. Sounds crazy to me.

Make sure you go through to the check out and ensure the flights include all taxes etc.

I’d take the direct $1600 flight

That’s a pretty good deal for that time of the year.

  • Just FYI, as of one year ago, both you and your son would require a valid Canadian passport to enter Canada as you're dual Citizens. Under special circumstances, you both may be able to apply for a special citizenship endorsement on Aus passport before you fly. You can check the requirements on their website.

The airline would not let you check-in for the flight without this.

Ignore this if you guys already got one, just thought of raising this as you said you've not been back for 14 years.

If the son was born here and never registered as a citizen of Canada he can get in on AU passport because he is technically not a dual citizen.

      • Well under some circumstances the child may be an Aus/Canada dual citizen at birth, and would not explicitly need a conferral/registration/request.

If not a Canadian citizen, an eTA is required before the child can be checked in for the flight.

EDIT: So a quick Google reveals that for Canada, a birth registration is not mandatory. If the conditions are met, the children born overseas becomes a citizen whether the parents register the birth or not.
And you wonder why imposing Sec. 44 is difficult.
