Graphics Card Warranty

Okay I just wanted to talk to someone about warranties. So I bought a r9 390x with 2 year warranty in March 2016 and had issues with it throughout the time but I lived with it as they weren't really that bad. It finally got unbearable and I took it back to my PcCaseGear in December 2017 to claim under warranty and they took about a week for them to process and they sent back a refurbished unit.

The refurbished unit is now playing up and I'm going to have to return it again. I don't really want another one as I feel it's going to stuff up again within the next month (when it's out of warranty). What can I do? Can I ask to get a different model? Can I get some store credit to another model?

Any advice would be appreciated.

what did they say when you asked them about it?

    • I've submitted a warranty claim and I've got to go drop it off tomorrow.

same fault or a different one?

    • Slightly different issue but a problem with the card nevertheless

the refurb would probably be much newer than the one you purchased originally.
    its fine relax.

sounds like you don't want the gfx card anymore, get it repaired or replaced, sell it, buy the card you want.

    • Yeah the issue is more it's an oldish card now, since the new architecture cards came out, I don't think there would be too much resell value. Additionally graphics card prices are really high right now due to the mining.

If you have a minor problem with a product or service, the business can choose to give you a free repair instead of a replacement or refund.

When you have a major problem with a product, you have the right to ask for your choice of a replacement or refund. For a major problem with a service, you can choose to receive compensation for the drop in value below the price paid, or a refund.

What are the symptoms of the card 'playing up' can you replicate it to them in store?
Take it in, ask to speak to the store/franchise owner, tell them the history you've had with the card, show them the current issues with the replacement and ask if they can do something in good faith like put store credit towards a current model (based off the age of the card I would hazard a guess at a low store credit amount, maybe 10-25%)

    • Hmm yeah I was thinking as such! Thanks

  • There's graphical artifacts appearing while playing different games, lines across the screen etc. Slightly different to the previous issue with the last one but an issue with the card.

    Is there another common factor?
    Could it be your monitor?

Yeah there could be, but it's quite hard to test without a second rig or something like that which I don't really have. I've tested with different drivers, a different monitor to no avail unfortunately :/

PcCaseGear are pretty good with their service and they do offer to normally test it on their test system before they return it to the vendor which is what I did last time and they confirmed it was a card fault.

It's a real bummer because it takes a little while to get a card back.
