Teacher Aide rates and conditions (QLD)

We are looking at options for my wife to return to the workforce after raising our littlies, she is contemplating doing a teachers aide course as a possible (school-aged) kids friendly occupation. I realise that they don't earn a heap but am having issues accurately comparing it to her previous occupation as I have seen different hourly/annual rates and not sure what hours/holidays that includes. Can anyone clarify it for me in regards to what Teachers Aides earn, hours worked, are school holidays paid/unpaid and any other general info that might be of interest?

I am particularly interested in pay rates in regards to QLD but as I assume they would be similar across states I'd be interested in that too.

Thanks, I think I have already found the relevant agreement here It seems to state that the starting rate is about $25/hr, so 6 hour days 5 days a week 40 weeks a year (plus 4wk AnnLeave to be taken in holiday time) so 33K per year and you take a reduced pay per fortnight in school time to accrue TIL for the other holiday periods so your income is spread over the entire year.

The Victorian equivalent I have seen however states that Salaries start at 43K per year and some private school add I have seen are in the range of 50-55K/yr so there is a big difference and I am trying to better understand what the differences are, if my above assumptions are correct and also what sort of progression is likely up the pay scale etc.

My wife and I did teacher aiding
    From out experience
If you're on contract you'll get the holiday pay
Casual rate was $30.xx an hour

    • 6hr days?

Going by your name are you a teacher now? and if so how did you find the difference?

      • Depends on when they needed me. The school did split days so I often worked 7-4. Good money. It was in special ed.
It was virtually baby sitting, whereas teaching is 7am - 5pm
        Entirely different

What sort of qualification did you do?

        None, didnt need a qual
Was in the middle of my bachelors of sec edu

Something else to consider is that sometimes an aide will not be employed full time.

A part-time role probably would be good to start with and ease back into it so this is a consideration but also a positive.

  • Hi All,

Good discussion, keen to know where did you guys do the teachers aide course, google suggests tafes and private colleges ? We are based of Hobart and my wife is keen to get into teaching through this one. Any suggestions ? May be online ones ?

    Regards

    • Each state is a bit different, but it's usually a certificate or diploma of Education Support. It's not a direct pathway to teaching, but many teachers do it as an additional qualification. You'd have to look at your university options to see how they do it.

As an example, these are two options available to you -
      http://www.utas.edu.au/courses/cale/courses/42a-associate-de…
      https://www.tastafe.tas.edu.au/courses/course/certificate-ii…

They're quite different in terms of how long they would take and what is required. But they both qualify you to become an education support person.

      • Fantastic.

I did search for the Tafe cert iii but had no idea of the one by UTAS. Very interesting and thanks for sharing. I will let me wife know. Ozbargain network rocks.

        Regards
