iPad 4th Gen Finally Died, Looking for Replacement Suggestions

My 4th Gen iPad from 2012/2013 finally died. The device stopped responding to any inputs and is stuck on the Apple logo after hard resetting it. Battery's f***** too so I can't get it to last long enough for the recovery option.

Haven't had any other tablet/laptop device since I purchased this in 2013 and don't know what the go-to options are these days, would anyone have particular recommendations?

Looking for these properties in the device:

  • Browses YouTube/Netflix/Internet well
  • Lightweight and portable (especially for night-use in bed, iPad did me well for this purpose)
  • Touch controls
  • 4G not necessary

I've had a look around slightly and I've found the decent offerings are:
2017 iPad 9.7" WiFi or a MS Surface Book, although this is a significantly more expensive option. Would not be bad however for my final year of Uni if it's a decent price.

Wondering what a good "OzBargain" price for these devices are, although I am also open to other device suggestions.

All help is appreciated!

  • Go with pro 10.5".

Hard to go past the 2017 iPad 9.7" WiFi. Picked up one of the 32GB versions for ~$380 last year. Seems like a decent price for a well made product.

    Samsung Tab

  • Go with the iPad Pro 10.5. It should last you another 5 years.

  • Both the iPad Pro and the Surface Pro are not exactly Ozbargain friendly.
Maybe get a iPad 9.7" (2017) model, it's most likely the best investment. Depends on what features you want in it though.

My iPad 3 (2012) is still chugging along, but it's day is coming quite soon I think unfortunately :(

  • stick with a new ipad, not many other alternatives can do better than apple

  • A friend's iPad did the same thing (being unresponsive to input, then getting stuck on the Apple logo after hard resetting). He couldn't reset it through iTunes because it told him the latest iOS wasn't compatible. He took it to the Apple store and got it fixed there, for free. Maybe you should do the same, and get a new battery while you're there. Much better than spending hundreds on a new device.

If you're used to using an iPad you don't need a Surface Book or Pro, unless you're actually looking for a new computer, rather than a tablet (in which case heartily recommend it)

  • 10.5 iPad Pro for sure
