If you think you will only use 5 gigs - check the B-mobile visitor sims - http://www.bmobile.ne.jp/english/
You'll need to go to a BIC or Yodobashi store to get one, but it's a better option if you're there for 2 weeks, and fine to have another simcard in your phone.

I think it was around $35 aussie (bought 2.5 weeks ago in Tokyo at BIC Akihabara).
It's around 6 bucks a day for 1 gig per day if you go over though - be warned (data doesn't flow from one day to another when you go over)

      • Poll: Best Travel SIMS for JAPAN in 2018

If you go for a sim..

Bmobile has consistently been one of the best sim options for a few years. With a price drop in the last year or so.

(NTT) DoCoMo NETWORK for Bmobile, a bit surprised OP has no mention of what network they use..

  • As a comparison point for ozbargainers - I preferred to get a 5 gig 21 day sim from B-Mobile once I was in Tokyo (from any BIC store or Yodobashi).
    http://www.bmobile.ne.jp/english/

Came out at around $35 aussie from memory. Top-ups if you go over 5gigs, were 500 yen for 1 gig, for one day (so around $6 per day, not that cheap)

I just got back from Japan, and the service was great, fast/no-issues etc.

But if you think you're going to churn through more than 5 gigs - this pocket wi-fi deal will probably be better.

    • Wouldn't you be better to get a new SIM for $5 more ND not have the data die in a day…

  • Can anyone confirm if they throttle speeds after a certain usage? And how the speeds are in Japan?

    Thanks

    • Hi,

      Thank you for your enquiry.
Our Japan WifiPalm will provide you with full speed 4G/LTE Internet without any speed throttling.
Please refer to our Facebook customer reviews!

If anyone staying at airbnb accommodation, usually they provide free pocket wifi.

    • any you would recommend (airbnb) in tokyo?

      • -1

Had to book multiple AirBNBs in Tokyo/Osaka/Kyoto/Hiroshima/Fukuoka over the Cherry blossom period as all hotels were booked out. Even 4 star hotels that were no where near the city centres cost around $800+ p/night.

From extensive usage of AirBNB over the last week, I've noticed how absolute garbage their website is, especially for a company that is supposedly on the forefront of web development.

        A few reasons include:
        - Zoomed in map only displays a small subset of all available properties at once, there is no show all button.
        - Where the properties are displayed on the map, is actually not where it is, it's just an approximate location.
        - Poor filtering, inability to filter out properties with lack of or bad reviews. 4 Beds in Tokyo = 1 Semi-double and 3 floor futons the majority of the time which just added to more search time.
        - Hosts can cancel on you at ANY time. At best you get a small reimbursement from AirBNB themselves - though this means nothing to a renter as booking another place last minute will still leave you out of pocket a lot more.

Some hosts may provide free pocket WiFi, but do not rely on this, if the previous tenants used up all the data within a timespan of 3-5 days or whatever it is, you're throttled down to dialup speeds.

To conclude, you really only book AirBNB if you're a poor(student/backpacker) or simply don't have a choice due to peak period/booking last minute. I would've much preferred to book hotel again, but at around $800 p/night for places nearby the major stations, it was just not worth it - beggars can't be choosers.

It isn't really comparable to a similar platform as Uber, as when things do go wrong for your AirBNB stays such as last minute cancellations, theft, privacy invasion - you have far more to lose.

Depending on what the host provides this wifi can be very slow - meaning you'd struggle to send an email or even load your emails. There is no way to know how bad it is until you arrive as if you ask the host they will always tell you its perfect. Once a host forgot to pay their bill and I didn't get wifi for 3 days and even then it was slow.

    • I can't remember exactly where as my friend booked it. It was in shibuya.

I am a low volume user, so I prefer just using my Singapore starhub prepaid for roaming. $7 for 1Gb, valid for 7 days. An extra $1 can buy you another 7 days.

  • Does this cover Okinawa?

    • Hi,

      Yes, we do!

  • Anyone who finds themselves using several such deals should seriously consider switching to Vodafone for their international roaming option.

  • Hi rep. I noticed on the site it says it’s possible to use in other countries too.
Doing a trip to Japan but also a few days in South Korea, will this deal work?

    • Hi,

Our Global WifiPalm product can be used in 2 or more countries at the same time, but the daily rate will be different from this promotion.

  • Any one know why Japan is so expensive for WiFi?

Thought such an advanced country would have free or cheap internet?

    • +2

I usually pay about $30-35 USD for 30 days for pocket WiFi in Japan. It's not expensive if you look around.
