What kind of company to call

Water is coming down between the gutter and the pergola roof, when the rain is really heavy. So I am thinking I need someone to a) clean the gutters and b) install something to close the gap between the roof and the pergola roof, so all the rain either goes down the gutter or runs off the pergola roof.

What sort of business do I contact for this? I tried several roofing companies (the sort that replace roof tiles etc) but did not get any response, not even to say "sorry we can't do that, but have you tried such and such a company".

Thanks in advance!

Plumber - specialising in gutters, downpipes, drainage etc. Check your local newspaper and you'll find a few.

    • Thanks, didn't think of a plumber!

Plumber would be very expensive way to clean gutters. I'd separate the job to gutters cleaning (very low skill required) and then a roofing company to check out the gap.

    airtasker

  • An handy man could also able to finish the work.

    Post the job on www.hipages.com.au

    • Aren't people always complaining about being scammed by people on hipages?

      • Don't know - only mentioned them because of their recent advertising campaign. What sort/type of scamming?

        • Where they take the deposit then do a shoddy job and disappear. Apparently you can't leave negative feedback on hipages. I've never actually used it this is just what I heard.

      • I have used hipages a couple of times. My 1st experience was excellent. The second - nobody even contacted me and that was airconditioner and install.

I have used Airtasker and had no problems.

However it hhas a few issues with how it works. It can be very hard to determine who to assign. Debtvst you like thd look of fresh my reusd they have to put in an offer to be assigned.

Airtasker takes 15% if the money, so some are cheaper on gbfuf iwn jobs and only use Airtasker when their own marketing is quiet.

OP - gutter cleaning is easy DIY. Or simply get someone to do thst. Plenty offer that service. However, it found bd wise to check the gutter is not full of holes too. A plumber afterwards might be able to determine problem and what to do. Often they will recommend someone if it is not their area.

Finding a good plumber who doesn’t charge an arm and a leg is the issue.

  • To clean your gutters, get Jim’s gutters or a normal handy diy guy…

Why can’t you clean the gutters yourself ? A extendable ladder is a good investment. You should really do this every year.

You can get something like gutter guard - https://www.stratco.com.au/servlet/Image?id=8699

To stop this happening again. Will cost a bit to install but from what I’ve heard it’s worth it.

    • It would require climbing onto the roof and over from the other side of the house and I'm not sure I want to risk that (I'm not super coordinated or well balanced)

I'll look into the gutter guard!

        Fair enough.

In that case get in touch with your local handy man. Get them to come a couple of times a year. Get them to come ASAP before it becomes a bigger issue. You might need them again at the end of autumn before winter.

I'd check on airtasker's public liability insurance policy before you post there.

@Ocker, Yes but that can be dealt with every couple of years.

The gutter guard does keep out leaves and such, but does not stop a build up of silt that gradually forms in the gutter, and in turn promotes the growth of moss. To effectively remove this silt build up you need to remove the gutter guard - a pain in the ass.

      • Agree totally with this. It was in our house when we got here.

There were 3 leapard trees in the front and 1 in the back and the leaves got through it. The silt build up was massive.

I think there may be a system now that can be lifted up or clip out to clean. However, I think I would lean to cleaning regularly.

  • I've seen youtube videos of people cleaning gutters with a leaf blower. It seemed to make it much easier for those able to easily walk on the roof.

  • You need a roof plumber.

  • Go to Airtasker. Few weeks ago I put up a job there : fixing loosing gutter from the main framework , and gutter cleaning. Many quotations obtained and each of them has review of their ability. I chose one by the name of Josh living very near to my place. He charged me $110.00 only. Very good job done.Go and try.

I think you need a roof plumber. Our house gutter and pergola both run into the shared gutter. Ours also overflows with heavy rain although our gutter is clean. We have been told we need more downpipes/wider downpipes to handle the heavy rain as 2 angled roofs run into the same gutter. Could be the same problem as yours?
We are yet to get the roof plumber to come but a friend just built a new pergola and that is what the roof plumber did while building was taking place at their home

    • Some guys tell you that when it is not the real problem.

Sounds like just a gap between the gutter and pergola, not a blocked gutter. Get on step ladder at open end of house and aim a high pressure hose along the gutter to clear any silt/dirt, so that it goes out to the street down the downpipe. Get a young friend or relative (if you are unable) to seal the gap from above with a expanding type filler (Bunnings or similar, around $10). A lot of skinny gutters they use these days can't handle any sort of heavy downpour anyway.
