UV filters are not worth it even for free.

    • I don't know how good these are, but I would buy an uv filter any day to protect my lens

      • UV filter or Polarised filter?, which is better?

UV filter's do nothing for the image on a digital camera, a polariser cuts down on reflections and glare and changes the image pretty dramatically.

I wouldn't permanently fix a polariser, usually only chuck it on for landscapes or shots around water.

Lens hoods will do more than a UV filter to protect your lenses and improves the lens rather than hindering it.

Lenses don't need as much protection as you think. Even then unless the actual element itself is cracked defects will almost certainly not show up on your photos

The glass UV filters for the most part are not in any way up to par with glass used in lenses especially so for pro lenses.

At the end of the day the cost (~300) to replace the front element of a severely damaged lens usually after years of service seems very reasonable compared with the cost of some of the high end UV filters like B+W, with the added benefit of you getting the best out of your equipment.

At least for me it is. YMMV
