Frame Rate Drop Whilst Gaming

Hi Guys, I'm wondering if you guys could help. I've been playing Overwatch for a while, but lately i've experienced my FPS drop from 70 to 30s, a halving of FPS intermittently. I have no other programs open, so i'm unsure why its occuring or how i can diagnose the problem.

Update after some testing and trying.

So running OW and playing whilst watching task manager. It tells me both CPU and GPU usage is normal, around 60% and i still get FPS drop.

I also notice the drop in frame rates occurs, mostly during fights. When fight is less intense or im just in movememt back to a fight frames would head back to normal.

    Then don't game.

check the gpu temperature if it's higher than 60*c there might be a issue with your cooling system or the ventilation if it's normal have to check each component, i suspect the temprature

    • My GPU temp (according to OW) has always been over 60 degrees ever since i've used it, its constantly around 63-65 degrees and that hasn't changed. Is that too high?

Even when i notice the FPS dips the temp doesnt seem to change much.

      • GPU are fine until 95C really, that's where they definitely throttle.

You can download Furmark and let it run, and check performance and temp graphs to see if it's throttling or not.

    updated gpu windows?

This is the first port of call.

1 - First check the GPU drivers. If you have an Nvidia GPU, the frequency of new drivers are becoming more rapid like app updates on your phone.
2 - Check if the game has updates.
3 - Check Win for updates.

Check monitor settings in your GPU software and ensure that it is set to 1080p/4K 60p (depending on what res/type of monitor you have)

Sometimes after restarting an update, the Nvidia drivers default. But having said that, 1080p 60p are usually the default settings.

      Cheers

Check task manager when the game is running. A problem might be using up the CPU or something else.

  • Agreed with above, check temps of the GPU, it might be getting throttled when it starts getting too hot. Also check for updated drivers.

    Including specs will help diagnose.

Bitcoin mining,,, they are using your GPU to mine bitcoin

  • cpu bottleneck from meltdown spectre patch

  • Monitor your Task manager to see if something is using your CPU GPU or Ram.

Quick fix would be just a reinstall of windows 10.

      • lol go back to whatever stone age OS you're using.

Interesting. What did airal3rt say? PM me.

        • @TheOneWhoKnocks: Just some unneeded insults.

      • Is there a viable alternative?

        • +2

Yes, the alternative is to be so angry that you argue and descend into insults with someone about windows 10 on Australia's foremost bargains website.

        • Of course not. Windows 10 is the best.

People who find Windows 10 bad also don't know how to search for solutions on Google and Bing.

  • Check the windows 10 power plan settings. Make sure you didn't accidentally change to power saver mode.

AMD Card? I'm assuming AMD card

    • Yep, its a AMD Radeon R9 380

  • lower settings. if theres shadows on in graphics, disable it

  • Scan for viruses is another one.

  • hey mate, hope this helps - try using clean install (DDU), redownload latest amd. if a version of amd works, do not auto update gpu drivers.

also, ensure your temperate for gpu and cpu is optimal. if you are bring thermal throttled; cleat airways and check the airflow if using standard air cooler.

your 380 should be fine to run OW.

  • Hi,

Not sure if your issue is related to the Game DVR. Recently, my CSGO framerate dropped from ~100fps to 30fps and stuck there. I set all the setting to low and it's still stuck at 30fps.

Found out that I can alt-tab out of the game and alt-tab back in to get back to ~100fps. Another way is to permenantly ]disable the Game DVR in Windows 10](https://www.kotaku.com.au/2017/09/theres-a-fix-for-frame-rat…).
